Hurray! Wow, thanks for explaining all this, once again a very interesting read for someone like me who knows very little about propagation and TC. The timing is perfect because I had no idea that it was so common for variegated plants to revert. But after hearing of your experiences and also seeing the pictures of the Birkins that are reverting I see how unstable they can be. It would be cool if one of us got a sport from the Birkins. I feel so blessed that I found this group because right now I am trying to purchase a variegated Florida Beauty. You would think that living in central Florida would make that easy but I have not had any luck. Or maybe I just don't know where to look. I have the all green Florida Beauty and love it, I also would like a Florida Ghost. I have only seen the FB variegated in other countries and the price tag along with the shipping is quite high. Knowing what I now know makes me not willing to invest alot in a variegated one. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I have a Florida Ghost and I can tell you....don't wast the $$. The leaves that come out white, they darken to green. Always. I had a Florida Beauty...it reverted. Phil Pink Princess? PLEASE do NOT waste the $$$$$$$$$

That's great to know Gina!
I don't usually spend a whole lot of money on one plant, but if ever I was tempted, I know better from the great advice I see on here!

Thank you Gina for telling me that. I knew about the Florida Ghost...that only the new leaves where white and then gradually change to green over the course of time. So sad to hear about the Beauty though and the Pink Princess. Sad What about Bipennifolium Flash Gorden? He is yellow variegated and so handsome. And I also was considering Standleyana white variegated. I love variegated philos! Please let me know what you think. I'm sad over here trying to find a good variegated Philo. Thinking

I have not heard of Splash Gordon reverting. Variegated standleyana is also considered pretty stable. But like any variegated plant, some are more variegated than others. Make sure the one you get has good variegation not just a little bit

Gina Cowell's of Newcastle has a superb selection of houseplants. I believe they source from the Netherlands. My jaw is usually on the flowor when I go there!

The plant behind is Ceropegia sandersonii.

I purchased a Birkin plug in January and once it started growing I discovered I actually had 3 plants. One started out with orange stems and the other 2 looked "normal". So far I have no variegation, but I do have one leaf that appears to have some red variegation in it. Curious what this is going to end up looking like!!

It was interesting reading this thread because I seriously had no idea any of this stuff!!! *Blush*

Very interesting read. I don't do facebook so thanks for sharing.

Gabriella Plants had them a few weeks ago for 12.50.

I bought the one I have back in Dec. From a local greenhouse. I paid $35

I personally have had good luck with pink princess, Florida beauty, and splash Gordon. The princess and beauty do require more care. I have had both of them for about 6 years now. I grow them in bright indirect light with humidity of about 60%. I cut them back if they start to give me to much of one color. If you can find one for a fair price I would give them a try.

I'm back on this forum Smiling Heres my small Birkin, though I know for a fact it's unstable.

You cleared up a question I had about a Birkin I once saw with two huge leaves that just HAD to be Red Congo leaves. Makes sense, thanks!

Here's one I saw recently, though the Red Congo is not as pronounced.

I've noticed the cost of them going way down too, like someone else mentioned. Apparently Overseas there's a big controversy about "pink congos" too, or maybe it's here as well. I'm not on the Facebook information train Hilarious! anyway, they're temporarily dyed or something crazy like that? I've heard the growers defend it by saying they're intended to serve in the same manner as a cut flower, baby showers, weddings, bat mitzvahs etc.

Yes the Pink Congo was treated with a hormone that turned it pink. The effect doesn;t last. I think the controversy was that they were extremely expensive, and they did not TELL you that the effect would not last

Yes! That's what I read! And they defended themselves by saying it was just meant to be in an arrangement on a table for an event, which I don't think I'm buying.
