One thing I have noticed about digital metering - that was never an "issue" with film ...is that anything reflective, shiny, sparkling, gleaming, shimmering or glossy confuses the digital metering sensors .... some cases: darkens the overall view - other cases: brightens the overall view
sometimes software like PS can fix it ...other times, PS cant fix it

I have a long, long list...

Started with 3-wheelers (vs. dirtbikes), then quads, then the side-by-sides. Have you seen the new, blown-plastic "kayaks"? Command line computers vs. today's phones? Heck, it's hard to find a car with a stick these days.

Anyway, I'm tired and the list is lots, lots longer in my mind. Just seems that lots of things that required some skill to perform/achieve has been made more easily accessible. Not sure that's something to complain about or not. And I might be getting a little creaky for my dirtbike...but our side-by...we've been to some remarkable places in that.

Maybe the worst part is "if it's not on the 'net, it never happened." Who knows how to use a medical library? A law library? A regular university library anymore? Or even buys books? This sounds like an old guy ranting. Might be.

But I sure wouldn't go back to my K-1000 given the choice - if only for the volume and immediate feedback. It's incredible. And lets me shoot orders of magnitudes more - which I enjoy immensely.

I'm sure many of us share those sentiments when we're "feeling our age". Usually I don't think much about it - except lately when I seem to be reminded daily that I'm "elderly".

So, back to backgrounds!
I love it when a butterfly color co-ordinates with the flower or background.

I've seen a few here, but never been able to capture one. Well done Margie!

Thank you for your replies and thumbs up.
I too, have never seen a secondary rainbow. In these times of uncertainty, I consider it to be a sign - a sign of "Hope & Optimism".

Thank you William for setting up this challenge! This thread has helped me to focus on improving the background of my photos which was my #1 photography goal for this year.

Since getting my new macro lens this year, I've become quite comfortable with setting the aperture and depth of field. I'm now able to routinely blur out the background and have a sharper foreground which is what I've been wanting to do with my rose photography for quite sometime. I usually set the f-stop at f/4 for a soft background. Here's an example: I have roses planted along a ginger gravel and gray slate pathway which always looked so texturized and harsh in the background, distracting from the roses when I took a photo. Now I can create a smooth backdrop for my pathway roses!

I have a Fujifilm X-T3 that has a cropped sensor so my 80mm macro lens would be a 120mm on a full frame camera. I set my ISO and shutter speed on auto and manually set the aperture. Here's another example using f/4 but where the background is more distinct yet hopefully doesn't overwhelm the roses in the foreground.

Any kind of technical skill isn't easy for me to acquire so I just wanted to say thanks!

Excellent light, and beautiful soft colors for the background, that works really well with the pink of the rose. Seeing one flower from the front and the other one a bit from the side adds a lot to the composition as well. This is similar to how you often would portray things in a painted floral illustration.

Very nice, Carol. I'm particularly fond of the second pic. The cornflower stands out a lot from the background. Smiling
