Where Do Cloves Come from?

Where do those little dry, hard, brown sticks we poke into hams come from? Seed pods? Vines? Trees?

To me cloves are for gingerbread:

Best to buy whole cloves, then grind them in an electric grinder. Ground cloves do not stay fresh for long.

For health reasons (and flavor!) I would suggest using real butter in this recipe. I recently found European cultured butter at my local Publix. It is probiotic like real butter is supposed to be.
