I went to my local ace and was stunned to see a gaillardia with three inch wide flowers. At first i wondered if it was due to the fertilizer it was fed. When i get high speed net and have a bloom i will post a pic. The name of the plant is gaillardia aristata sun top yellow touch. I put it out and a bumble bee was right at it. The flowers are the typical gaillardia colors, but the size of the blooms are stunning.

I 'm beginning to think my gaillardia pot has two different gaillardias. I see a second bloom which appears to have the center of the flower looking different. Unless the flower changes it looks I may have a mystery.

Eric, the only Gaillardia I have ever had luck with is Gaillardia pulchella, native to Florida. The store hybrids never last and never re-seed. The pulchella will self seed all over your garden in sunny natural sandy areas. You can order seed through the Native plant society.

Ive noticed the gaillardias I have tend to do better in the fall and winter. I had one gaillardia plant that died last year I think from too much heat, or water.

Here is one bloom in the mystery pot.

That looks amazing. How long have you had it for? I have to keep mine in pots no where to plant it. So far ive been looking for the bloom that first attracted me to the plant and so far have not seen it bloom like that again.
