Isabelle Rose is registered as 59" but doesn't grow quite as tall as my Scandinavia planted next to it, which is registered as 54". The scapes for Scandinavia are chunkier, but it seems less tolerant of our winds.

Winds out of the northwest can get pretty challenging here, so I have limited places I can confidently plant tall daylilies. I often stake the scapes of Dances With Giraffes (60").

I have gotten daylilies from Pat, (2) of her seedlings grow tall here in my gardens... seedling 15-117 and another that seems to have no number are both over 40-inches.

It's hard to judge 'tall', since it seems to be so relative... Aldersgate (34") is tall compared to most historic daylilies, but really short compared to Autumn Minaret (easily over 60-inches). So I have to say some are 'medium-tall' ... starting at about 3-feet and taller: Angels Over Me (35"), Autumn Red (39"), Bali Watercolor (35"), Bermuda Coral (45") Birdwing Butterfly (45"), Black's Chocolate Delight (44") Blue Racer (43"), Cameroon Night (36"), Cherry Ripples (36"), Dance of the Fairies (38"), Diva on Edge (39"), Egyptian Queen (38"), Embellished Pink (36"), Emerald Isle (40") Explosion in the Paint Factory (38"), Facemaker (40"), Get Jiggy (37"), Happy Hawaiian (36"), Heavenly Flight of Angels (39" - some years is taller) Humungousaur (41"), Itsy Bitsy Spider (35"), Joan Derifield (35"), Kelli's Wedding Gown (40"), Lady Neva (42" in stats, often taller), Lavender Lighthouse (37"), Long Legged Lap Dancer (43"), Luna (39"), Makon Cline (42"), Matador (38"), Northfield (36"), Parade of Peacocks (36"), Party Array (42") Perplexing Plum (42"), Persian Pattern (37"), Pinhill August Sunset (35"), Pinhill June Sunrise (36"), Roaring Rapids (38") Rocket City (36" or taller), Royal Frosting (36"), Sharply Focused (36"), Snufalufagus (37"), Spiral Charmer (36"), Stargate Portal (40") Tantra Boogie (40"), Tooky Tooky Bird (37") Variegated Kwanso (35"), Whale Tails (38"), White Eyes Pink Dragon (40"), Wild Horses (37").

As for tall: Autumn Minaret is always taller than I am (5 ft. 2") and anything at eye-level or higher is 'tall'. Chaotic Design (52") Ginger Swallowtail (42" in the stats, but some years is taller here), How High the Moon (48"), Give Me Eight (48"), Jolly Red Giant (68") Lyndell's Pink Lemonade (46"), Moon Ladder (56"), Sears Tower (72"), Sky Dragon (61"), Spirit Song (50") Work With Me, Annie (48"), Zabriskie Point (54")

Have not posted pics of many of these to the database and will have to make a better effort this year to get pictures showing how tall many are. But I do like the tall ones... using some of that vertical space sure adds to the overall look of the gardens.

I don't remember where I found this photo, the hybridizer or the name of the flower, but I think it might be the winner for tallest daylily. Since my memory isn't what it once was, do any of you remember the picture or any of the details? I know the picture was taken at least 8 years ago, maybe more. Really not a very clear picture. I'm sure it had been copied several times before I found it.

Merlin's Moth, 48", new to my garden last Fall and have no photos or idea how tall it may reach here, however I am really looking forward to it. It will be the tallest in my garden, for now. Hilarious!

Something, 40", has not been quite that tall, moved in the Fall and hopefully will do better.

Hyperion, 40"
Thumb of 2023-03-08/2Dogsmother/d8fdac

Flying Saucer, 40", and is typically about that tall.

Cameroon's Twister, 40", also new to my garden last Fall.

I have a number of daylilies between 36 and 40", have not listed those. There are also several coming this Spring that are 40" and above. Can't wait to see all these tall girls at the back of my beds!

The comment about perceived height is interesting - ADS doesn't define it for us. I think, for me, once the registration hits over 42" I start thinking of a daylily as tall and wonder if the scapes will be sturdy enough to handle our wind. Taller than42" generally needs to go at the back of a more protected garden.

40-42 inches is about when I think of a daylily as tall, too. Started loving the tall ones about 5 years ago, but the scapes have to be able to hold up the blooms or the height is pointless.

Yes, I agree that ~3 1/2 feet is a good definition of tall. And, most of my tall daylilies are good scape artists. I do have one called 'Crooked' that has most scapes starting out horizontal:) I am hoping that it will do better when it matures... on the bright side, it is easy to deadhead with the lawn mower:)

Hemerocallis 'Crooked' 7/2022 Daylily D3- (Murphy, 2005) Tall orange Daylily , Mature plant size: 59in., Golden orange, with red eye. , USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month 7a, In Garden Bed D3 for 325 DAYS (Murphy). Planted in 2021.

Murphy, 05 - 59" La 6" dor.dip. Reblooms. Every scape is crooked or loops. Golden orange, with red eye. Doubles about 30% to 50% of the time, with good conditions.

Completely distinctive, with 59" scapes, every one with a crook, bend, or even loop. You read that correctly. Nothing like it in your garden! Late bloom and good color, with green throat, complete the package. Scapes do lean, and twist, and some fall, but then grow toward the sun, with 15 buds, and 2 branches. Fertile, parents unknown. Exhibition Judges don't know what to do when this is on the show table.

2022 note: Scapes are crooked. However, some are laid out on the ground. Maybe this will improve as the plant matures.

Very pretty, Mike! I love hearing how a hybridizer comes up with names, so I'm curious about the name 'Darkness Rising'. How did you come about this name for this daylily? Thanks!

I have a question do the tallest day lilys or even those 41 inches do they have strong enough scapes to stand straight up

or do they have to be staked?

Here I feel they would lean over..

so I always chose 36 inches tall or 38 as my favorite height of a daylily.

Good question, Sheri!! I have some that lean that are shorter than you mentioned. Leaning is an inherent trait in some daylilies and I think sometimes it depends on where it is grown. I have a couple of leaners that come to mind, 'Mascara Snake' is registered at 57" tall, but it leans horribly in my garden! So does 'North Wind Dancer' (registered at 42"). I still have both and swore I wasn't going to stake any daylilies, but this year, I am probably going to put a small fence in front of Mascara Snake.

However, I just got 'Panic in Detroit' in 2021. It is registered at 40" tall and it has scapes that could hold up any bloom, lol!
