I know now that young Plumeria are sensitive to over watering. My plumeria are in pots. How tall/old should they be where they can be freely left in the rain. Living in the Houston area, sometimes we got some torrential downpours and I worry about over watering.

Good question!

1. make sure they are in a very well draining mix
2. given that you have taken care of 1. they can be out in the rain without any problem, unless it is also COLD (like you get those miserable Houston two week winters where it rains at 45 degrees - that is death to plumeria...)

Thanks, Hetty. All the plumeria will all have a cozy place in the house come 40*. How tall do they have to be before I can just leave them out unprotected from the rain. In particular, I have one established 8" pink NOID and one established 18" orange NOID in pots with well draining soil. Do I have to worry about how much water they get now?

its not so much that they are larger when the temp gets that low they stop growing to go dormit and stop using water the roots will start to rot if the soil remains wet. I THINK...LOL

as long as they have rooted and have great draining soil your ok if your trying to root them then it might have some bad effects

If you have a heavy, poorly-draining soil, over-watering is definitely a problem. I use a mixture of 2/3 potting soil or cactus mix and 1/3 Perlite, and this works very well. In fact, when it gets into the 90s, you can water every two days with this mixture without problems.

I use my own mix of potting mix and 50 % per lite and as soon as they are rooted its fine until temps start going down we get rain everyday and they love it

the key is well draining soil and warm temps and they rooted already
