Thank you Linda for the order. It is good to know they are already rooting in.
Keep a watch for the sale to resume, as this next time will be the last for this year. Smiling

I have had trouble getting new semps to root, because I have squirrels that want to play soccer with them. I can't believe the thought didn't occur to me sooner --- I need to plant them in pots and keep them INSIDE until they have good roots. Or cover them... I have a little mini-greenhouse frame whose plastic cover is kaput. I could surely cover it securely with mesh. I don't think the squirrels would make desperate attempts to get at them... it's just that when they come across them, they can't resist flinging them around or carrying them off (for nest material? who knows).

So... now I'm watching this thread!

Jill, if you want to plant them outside just put some kind of stakes in the ground/pot and put bird netting over them. The stakes will hold the netting up away from the semps. I also plant heavier types of rocks along the edge of the netting to the squirrels etc. can't go under the edge. This has worked very well for me.
For individual plantings I use wire baskets that I get from the Dollar Store. You can even put a rock on top of them so the critters can't tip them over.

Good tips, thank you!! Makes me more willing to try again. I do love semps, and I have a few that I've found locally, deeply rooted in pots... even then, they do best if I put them in containers where the squirrels aren't likely to get at them. I have had no luck at all with semps in the ground... partly because I'm far from being a meticulous weed-puller, but also because even with a little bit of slope and well-draining soil I think it's just too wet over the winter. If I keep a pot in one spot in the rock garden, they should still be able to push roots down down down through the hole in the pot, just like they would if growing in a crevasse.

Received my 3rd order Lynn, thanks!!! I lost a few from either the puppy or the cat plucking them out of the pot but I think I've got them in a better location now. I'll move them outside once my beds are finished. Thank you so much!!!

Hi Thea. I just redid all my beds, so I won't have anything available until mid July. By then everything will have put out new rooted offsets. I hope this was helpful?
