My 3 Cordylines got too big so I cut them off about 6-8"from the top and stuck them in a bucket of water to wait for suggestions. Anyone got any? I don't have a heated greenhouse but it's not real cold here (it's Riverside CA). I've got pots and soil do I need rooting hormone?

Thanks for any suggestions. Crossing Fingers!

Most Ti plants are propagated using the buried cane method. You cut off all the leaves and section the stem into pieces usually 2-3 inches long, lay them flat in a shallow trough of potting mix and leave the top exposed, keep them moist and in bright light and warm. The stems will sprout new plants along their length. Once they develop their one root systems and gain a little size you can separate and pot them up. The extreme apical meristem where the leaves emerge will be pretty useless, the new growth usually emerges from old 'eyes' on the distal portion of the stem. But you can try cutting the leaves in half and just sticking that section in a container of soil.

Thank You! Gina!

These are C. australis, not terminalis. Would the process be essentially the same? What I've got look like bottle brushes.

A little scare for me the Electric pink was, I use to have one, but lost it while trying to propagate. Now only got torbay dazzler and the red one. One thing I learn from them is; they hate moist and shadow. they easily rot if the medium too moist, so you should careful on watering the cuttings. This is a contrast to the C terminalis which enjoys moist and shady, especially when propagating.
I will try propagate my Torbay dazzler this month, the top cutting rot away due to moist medium, but the bottom portion gave me three new stems to divide, so I would really want to hear how you do yours, and the results.
if I remember it correctly Electric pink love to have pups at their base even without cutting the mother plant,

Ah sorry! I have never grown anything other than the terminalis so when someone says Cordyline I think terminalis

Well I managed to get the cuttings stuck finally. They've been sitting in a bucket of water waiting for me to do something for a month. Surprisingly they didn't rot Hurray! but unfortunately for me they also didn't root Sighing! . So now they're in 6" and 1 gallon pots waiting for something good to happen Crossing Fingers! . They're in my 6x6' pop-up greenhouse on my patio and hopefully in a month or two I'll have 3 new plants. What I'm going to do with them is a puzzle but we'll see what happens.

Well, sadly it was a complete loss. All 3 dried out and turned brown. Sighing! The 3 original plants are doing just fine though and branched out nicely. There will be opportunities in the future so at least I know what doesn't work.

Better luck next time.
