this has hung on one of my epis since last fall when I brought them in for winter. What exactly is it...seed pod or fruit??

Both. It is the fruit that contains the seeds.

Ctcarol is correct. What kind of epiphyte is it? Seed pods on Rhipsalidopsis aka Easter cactus can take a year to mature.

I had a couple of these fruit/seed pods on my Epiphylum Guatemalense. When it dried and turned brown, I plucked it off and found tiny green plants in the seed pod. As it was winter, I didn't try to plant it. Perhaps next time.
