There is no right or wrong about round and fat or tall and skinny. Thank goodness there are daylilies to please everyone's taste. I have always thought that was one of the best things about daylilies. That they were so many different looking flower types. Thumbs up

Rita, I couldn't agree more! Some shapes and forms, I just don't like as much as others, but I know the complete opposite is true for others. There really is something for everyone, and I do find that my taste in daylilies is always changing!

bb, great advice about going toward bud count and branching. I've been so worried about a pretty face that I haven't even thought of the rest yet. But, this is my first year having any seedlings to bloom, so that advice will be at the top of my list of things to work toward. I can worry about the pretty part later, but when you first start out, that's what you really want!

Well yes, I don't much like the skinny ones but I think it is great that they are there for those that do like them. Lots of flowers for everyone to find exactly what they like.

My taste has changed somewhat also. I used to just like the very round full ones but now like different flowers shapes also. And I think it is a shame that people tried to stear a newly starting out hybridizer into a flower form that was not right for her.

OR, you could be like me and lovem' all! It's a matter of money money money and hours in the day, for me. I really think I would would love to have about 10 acres of raised beds, water system on timers, and people that wanted to WORK only to recieve pretty flowers, suntans, backaches, and blisters for pay. Now, that would be perfect. I would want to be the big butted busy bee bouncing around from bloom to bloom putting fresh pollen on everything. But, when it comes to all the other stuff, the unpaid hired help could do it. Oh yes, I love to make pictures too but I'd have to get help with that too because it takes me hours just to make photos of my daylilies now and if I had 10 acres, I'd never get around in one day. On a typical day, I will take over 400 photos of maybe 50 blooms. I have taken over 1000 photos in one day. Of course, I didn't do anything else they day. I have to have the perfect angle, heighth, distance, light, and everything else it takes to snap that shutter, so it takes me along time to make just one!!

I read in a magazine today, "To see the miracle of a seed go from seed to bloom and then to fruit, is such a blessing." That's the way I feel with every daylily seed that I grow or attempt to grow. It's a miracle that God gives to me and I find it amazing! Smiling

Only a gardener could understand why we go outside, dressed in whatever we could throw on, at the oddest hours, taking photos of our FLOWERS!

As for daylily shapes, initially, I liked traditional daylilies. Didn't like doubles or teeth or too many ruffles or those ones with the curly Q's.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I love them ALL!

Me too, Jan, all types are growing on me as for the beauty of blooms.
Sometimes though, I need a particular type just for crossing, so tend
to look for what I need more than what I want to look at. It is soooo
hard to choose, especially when trying to keep the numbers within
the amount that I can care for without killing myself. Green Grin!

Well I have not started hybridizing yet but I do have a tone of hybridized seeds and seedlings started. It all started with wanting some hardy plants to fill my part of the yard.(new house on about 10 acres)My husband gets to have his pretty lawn on the side of the house that leads into the woods and I get the other side of the house with an overgrown field for all my plants and veggies. Its proubly an acre or 2.
So I was looking on ebay for a good deal on plants and came across daylily seeds but I bulked at 10 dollars fro 10 seeds.(im a cheapo). So I typed daylily seeds lowest prcie with shipping and bam great deals (im sure i have seeds from some of you on here)I bid on alot. Then I found someone selling them at win 10 or more and shipping is free. Hurray!
Then I found the lily auction Drooling Im sure I have enough by now proubly 300 or more seedlings just starting from seed and over a hundred plants from buying and some from trading of my peonies I dug up from my old house.
I have more seeds on the way and auctions that have not closed yet.It is madness I tell you. Hilarious!
I have made folders for all the types I want to cross when they bloom and have researched as well.
So I know who will be crossed with whom except in the misc folder those will wait to see what they look like when they bloom.
So im not an official hybridizer yet but i have everything I need to start in the spring.
