Flower Power in Baskets

By Joannabanana
September 16, 2012

In late summer, you might find that potting soil in some of your baskets has become a bit compacted. Watering daily keeps the plants going, but often the plants become nutrient deficient and the soil medium has no nutritional value left to keep producing flower buds.

I have to try this! Thumbs up I've rarely seen so many blooms on late-season baskets. Gorgeous!

Joanne, are you good about pinching your potted plants, or do they do this mega-blooming without it?

I tried to learn how pinching works this year, but most of the plants I did pinch still gave up one longish stalk with a bloom at the end, rather than lots of shorter stems and more blooms. Confused Now, if the critters much on them, they do it right - it's just when I hack at them that they don't cooperate. Rolling on the floor laughing

I don't pinch or deadhead. Since these were bought as 10" hanging baskets, I assume that the grower had pinched (sheared) the basket at an early growth stage, about 4 weeks before I bought it in May. The growers often shear the plants when they are still in the propagation trays before they plant the hanging baskets. That also will promote strong side branching right from the start

Ah! Thanks.

I started mine from seeds, so there's one difference. To shear means to just trim them?

Yes. I find it hard to pinch plants.

Beautiful blooms! I tried a few hanging baskets this year and your helpful hint to line the bottom with a plastic bag worked well. I still get a bit of the soil falling out but less than other years. I mainly have foliage but a few pokes will probably help. Thanks!

Chelle,

This is what they do at a grower location. These were rooted in this tray of 105 cells. They are sheared and allowed to side branch. Often, they are also planted into the baskets soon after. The baskets may also be sheared about 4 weeks before shipping time
