Thank you ALL for your suggestions. It's been awhile since I've been on the forum. I did plant the peony 'bits' in my yard and will wait to see if there's any life in them. I also ordered two more peonies. I'm about to plant them but am nervous that I get the proper drainage. Any tips on how to ensure they don't sit in water again? There's lots of clay in my yard. I dug down about a foot to clay. Should I put some gravel on top of that clay or try to amend it with Zeolite or something like that? Then put the dirt and the peony tuber in? The tubers both have several eyes and some growth. I understand they shouldn't be too deep. Should any of the growth show above the dirt or should it all but under the soil. Thanks for this forum. I very much appreciate the expertise here. Just as an aside. I ordered my peony in January and waited and waited and waited for it to arrive. The original peony was my Dad's pride and joy. He passed May 16, 2016. What date did the new peony finally arrive? May 16, 2022. A little piece of heaven in my heart for my garden.

Hey all. I need to ask probably a really stupid question but here goes. How do I know if my soil has good drainage? I have planted both new tubers in my garden but I'm SUPER worried that I will have the same issue with drainage. Both tubers have growth on them. I have one in sun and one in partial shade. What kind of soil should I use and how often should I water. I put some pea gravel at the bottom of the hole where they are planted but I feel like the soil is STILL too heavy. Any suggestions? My worrying about them probably isn't helping. I'm wondering if I shouldn't have got them started in a pot then put them in the garden. I just don't know. Thanks for your help.

Diddleydee, the best way is to observe the spot while it's raining. If the water puddles there it is not well draining.

You didn't put your zone, but in a warmer zone that doesn't stay frozen all winter, this can lead to rotten roots.

Diddleydee, you should watch this video with Carol Adelman showing how she plants peonies in her OR location, might give you ideas about how to keep yours from rotting. https://peonyparadise.com/plan...
