All lovely...the small Bot Garden in Brookings has a couple of Peonies that I would love to grow, BUT....Strever (Dick), didn't you say that Peonies have not done well for you at your place on the River?
Because my 'yard' here is small amd flat and sunny, I find that I do grow more things that I'm used to from SoCal......,the Cistus, Echiums, Salvias, but I would prefer what you are growing there. As my trees grow, I will be able to transition somewhat.....but I do love the Aussies also...we shall see....my main problems here are in colors of flowers and percentage of color to green....the place is too small to accept large flowers in bright colors competing....and Verticillium Wilt, which I've not had to deal with before...it all brings something new to learn...

In this last shot, there are a Vine Maple and a Cornus capitata in the corner to help hide that telephone pole later...they're doing well now, but the Maples are susceptible to the Verticillium and I lost a couple of Coleonemas right there...so we shall see....

That last one doesn't look real good, Sherry. I have no doubt you will find something that will work there. Smiling

lol...the tree that is over in Melinda's yard, just beneath that pole is in trouble...there are 3 trees there and I don't know if it's hard packed soil, Verticillium or what...but there's an evergreen that's really bad and butchered, I would imagine because that's what happens when you plant something like that right there with that pole where it shouldn't be, a Purple Leaf Plum...and that other thing that I haven't really paid attention to, but I think that's the one you're seeing...my Vine Maple isn't leafing out yet...I do think that my Paperbark in back has a problem.....time will tell. The yard is also rather an experiment in how various plants will handle verticillium...what makes it and what doesn't. It's sad for the things that were planted before I found there was a problem.....but...oh well, celebrate the successes. I hope to not lose the Filberts in back. If the Embothriums in back turn out to have waaay too much red, I may be glad to lose them....when I looked back at that online pic of what the place looked like when we bought it, I see that that bright red Rhody was there in front of the house...the one that I chopped out....lol..

Beautiful garden lovely colors and textures. So lush. There is a huge variety of plants for interest and flowers to croon over all 4 seasons.

Anyone interested in growing peonies they need a chill for about 6 weeks with temps below 40' to set bloom. A cross between the tree peony and herbaceous peony known as Intersectional or aka Itoh do better in zones 9-10 . They die to the ground and come up in spring. They require shade in the heat of the summer . Once established they don't require a lot of maintenance. Bulb mites, mice , gophers, woodchucks and other critters are known to eat the roots .

That was where the Echium 'Mr. Happy'....was....lol. Last stand for Mr. Happy. I need to pot the seedling volunteers there today so I can cut back the remains. Thee's a hydrangea in there wanting that other stuff out of the way. The sun is out and I have a lost of things to hit today.....

But wait...what's this...?...ah, season's first Leycesteria bloom.....I've been waiting for them to start...

No. I was talking about the tree at the corner of the house. Maybe it's just the lighting, but it looks brown on my monitor.

lol....No, that's the Rhodocoma that the birds strip all of the top strands from for nesting....the brown is seeds, I suppose, I've never gotten around to reproducing it to check....

Wow! That's a pretty one. Zone envy when I see those. The only big, showy flowers I can get are Epiphyllums, and those flowers only last a day or two.

I'm happy that this volunteer popped up in the jungle mound, it's the only one up and at full size, only baby seedlings whee the others were...hiding behind it the pink Fuchsia magellanica.....

I have a lot of Aristea ecklonii (hint...it reseeds a lot) and I move them around as fillers, til something else comes along...and it gets the seed pod stems and looks messy and I say I will get rid of them...then they flower.....

lol...when we got here, I started digging out sod. I had a big Ariens rear wheel tiller that I used for years and when we left Fallbrook, I decided I simply would not be doing anything that heavy again and it did not make the trip up here with us. As it was Jer made 5 runs up here and back with the biggest U-haul...I gave away truckloads of plants and pots, etc, brought one small box trailer of plants...so when I knew that I wanted bordering the property bed, I started digging out sod....and mounding it all in that back yard corner.....and when I ran out of room for planting certain things, and I knew that mound would have good drainage and top soil, I stuck things in there...There is a Meyer Lemon, Cistus 'Blanche', Dendromorpha, Echium vulgare, Fuchsia magellanica (was already there), a huge old Buddleja, and various other joined-in-the-party stuff...plus plenty of the ivy and blackberry...it waits to be sorted...lol..
