Ha, Jen, lake effect. Can you believe it. The snow is a great insulator, and starts before the ground freezes here. The lake keeps the ground warm up until snow, and then the snow insulates it. We have a 1/2 inch or so where it touches the snow, but no freezing into the ground other than that. However, on the other end, spring comes really late up here by the lake.
