me too -- I usually just shove stuff in the ground, so I'm curious as well

I usually order mine in the Spring.

I order mine in spring too. I don't do any fertilizing at all in the fall but I think there are others that do that will hopefully chime in here.

I am just now redoing some gardens with a huge one coming up next week.

I use compost as my plant food.

Topdress a garden or two a year after the plants are cut back (easier). That way mother nature all winter can get the nutrients down to the roots.

When redoing a garden, yards of compost get added after the plants are dug out and placed on a tarp. So easy to replant them too, with all that fresh soft compost. Just make sure that it is not steaming. Ask me how I know!

A daylily bed just yesterday was turned into a hosta/shade garden. That was my 'late' daylily bloomers all collected into one area. It was a failure. In the middle of other daylily beds with all their dead or dying scapes (some pods) and I had to walk to it to enjoy it. Lord knows where all those lates are now going! Planned on putting them in other cottage gardens but they don't have many holes amongst the perennials. Oh dear...

I have also heard that others (long island) use grass fertilizer in the late summer/fall. Lots of nitrogen for plant growth. No need to worry about flowering at this time of year (for most of us)

Ive never done grass fertilizer, but I do go with a good hit of milorganite, they do love that nitrogen. I know others have posted that they use it as well. I will keep using foliar feed and nutrients up until it get really cool. I figure now is when they are making there buds for next year. I do try to hit them up again the beginning of the year before they scape, maybe february.

I imagine it would depend on your location. Up here in Ohio, I have heard no fertilizer after beginning of August. I think compost is fine anytime. I sometimes put some alfalpha pellets on in September. They break down pretty quick. I don't put them in the soil in fall, as I have heard the pellets decomposing heats the soil, delaying freezing.
