Connie, it's a long shot, but do you have seed in storage from any of David Sim's crosses, T0B1 x T9-6A, PPYF x T0B1, or PPYF x BE? I purchased these in 2002/2003. Simply put, some of the best diploid picotee trumpets I've ever seen, and also some lovely sunset tones.. I got some beautiful hybrids from crosses with these to 'Tropical Isle' and hybrids. But all of this germplasm has slipped away from me. If you have these, please grow them out and share seed!

Here are pics taken in 2006-2009 of some individuals from Dave's seed:

To Tracey, Patrick, David, et al. It is wonderful to see all the seedlings blooming from Bob Griesbach's genetics. The bulbs we rescued in 2016 are obviously being put to good work. Bob would be pleased.

It was not the best of lily years in the Midwestern U.S. this past season due to a spate of late freezes. I'll post two pics of my backyard taken exactly one year apart. Went from my best lily year ever in 2019 to my worst year ever in 2020. Just been that kind of year. But I've hundreds of seedlings up under lights in the basement, and have hopes for next season. As always. Plus Tracey has made mischief and convinced me to start breeding daylilies. Uh-oh. Not that she had to twist my arm very hard.

What a difference a year makes. 2020 has been let's just say, less than ideal.

Nice to have something just about indestructible to work with and daylily seedlings bloom pretty fast too.

Let's hope 2021 is kinder is every way. We need a good lily season here in the Midwest.

Some of the Orienpet seedlings that bloomed for me this past summer. Unless otherwise stated, from my crosses.

Lovely! #3 and #6 are my favorites. Though #2 is pretty darn nice too.

Jim, it looks like I do have T0B1 x T9-6A, which was Sims' seed list #CT2-1. It appears I haven't opened it but I see from your photo it is time that I did! I will have seeds from Tropical Isle x [(Tropical Isle x Sim's YPP) x Tropical Isle] in the NALS exchange plus the reciprocal. I lost track of Sims' seed number with that one but purchased in 2002 or 3 or thereabouts. I've been working with these for a number of years now. If my donation sells out I have lots of extra...

I think I posted these before but here they are again:
Tropical Isle x [(Tropical Isle x Sims' YPP) x Tropical Isle], seed will be in exchange
Thumb of 2021-01-01/pardalinum/11be5b

Another seedling from this cross is this pastel yellow-green trumpet:
Thumb of 2021-01-01/pardalinum/a75e79

I'm still going through and cleaning seeds and if I have any/enough for NALS I'll include it in my donation.

Tropical Isle is kind of funny in that it seems to get tired of its soil rather quick and I have to move them to new soil, then they pop right back to a good height.

Jim, those Sims seasons are just outrageous. I had to do double takes to make sure it wasn't a photo shop job! Rolling on the floor laughing just kidding of course. I know they aren't. Sure are beautiful lilies though.

Connie, that's very exciting to find out you have seed of the best of the three crosses! We expect great images and seed from you in three years. No pressure, lol.

Your 'Tropical Isle' hybrids are lovely. Always interesting to see how much its coloration and flower shape come through.

I've had 'Tropical Isle' since 2002. I moved it around a few time, but have had it in the same spot now for a good ten years. I nearly lost it this year. When I went to dig a few to donate to Jeff in early spring, I found out the bulbs had pulled themselves way too deep in the soil. Then the late freezes zapped any that broke ground. I carefully dug the area up this fall, and found about 15 very weak bulbs. Tracey got a few, I planted a few, and the rest have gone in the fridge for the winter. Hopefully back to full speed in a few years.

Here was my favorite hybrid derived from the PPYF x T0B1 pictured above x one of my 'Tropical Isle hybrids:
Thumb of 2021-01-01/Liliophilic/2e9757

It's long gone, of course, and no progeny remains from it. You can see why I am interested in rebuilding these lines.

Tracey and Dave,

Tracey, thanks for the compliment! You've gotten seed from several of these plants as parents. #s 2 and 6 are my favorites. Number 6 has also been very fertile both as a pollen and as a seed parent. Like on to 'Pink Jazz'. Huzzah.

David, I may garble the following story a bit, as it was 18 or so years ago I had the conversation, but it regards David Sim's hybrids I showed above. David S. had access to the fields of one of the last commercial lily growers out that way; perhaps Cebeco? I think he related having access to 100s if not thousands of trumpets to cross and collect seed from. This must have been in the 90s, as I bought seed from these crosses in 2002/2003. I imagine this had to been the culmination, and last gasp, of the decades of trumpet breeding that occurred in the Pacific Northwest at Oregon Bulb Farm, Cebeco, by Woodriff, McRae and the other giants in the area at that time. David S. saw trumpet diversity of the like that we will likely never see again on a commercial scale. The lily registry lists 100s and 100s of trumpet lilies released by commercial firms. Yet how many are available today, maybe a dozen or so? Us backyard breeders are really keeping trumpet breeding alive. My two cents.

Happy new year!

Oh, that is beautiful Jim, even the buds are great looking. I'll have to dig deep in my freezer and find these seeds (I'm NOT very well organized lol!) and get them started.
