It is over now, but in early June this 2020 my three Alleghany Serviceberry trees bore a good crop of berries despite the unusual, cold April & May here in southeast Pennsylvania. The trees were full of Robins, Catbirds, Mockingbirds, and Cedar Waxwings eating up any berry that had just barely turned ripe, from green to red to purple. I was thinking of collecting some myself for eating from a few of the few lower branches, but I did not get to it. Amelanchier (Serviceberry trees and shrubs) are beautiful, clean, neat plants with wonderful foliage, fall color, flowers, fruit, and smooth gray bark.

Ooh, I just love trees and plants that give wildlife more reasons to stick around!

My bushes had beautiful flowers but no berries this year I think do the late hard freeze (bad timing)

I eat the berries but there are always plenty to share Smiling

Rick,
I have been looking for a serviceberry tree for the last two years here in Georgia because of their early fruit for the birds. According to the USDA they are native to the area, but nobody seems to sell them. Do you have any insight as to why the tree is not sold here? Are yours planted or did they decide to sprout there on their own? I'm thinking they might be hard to grow from seed, cuttings, or grafting or are just slow to grow. Something that makes them not profitable because they are beautiful, and wouldn't be a hard sell. I'm just stumped and frustrated.

In order to find any Serviceberry trees or shrubs for sale, one must go to a larger, diverse conventional nursery or a native plant nursery. The big box stores do not sell them and many better woody plants or perennials or annuals. The Shadblow Serviceberry does grow over most of GA, except the southeast corner, and it grows in the panhandle of Florida. I don't know Georgia, but there should be some regular nurseries growing some down there. You can search on your computer by looking into GA nurseries.

Thanks Rick, having another search term will certainly help.
