Thread OP

I'm new to all of this and trying to get my one poor rose to bloom. It's watered in the early morning or late at night. Fertilizer 10-10-10 is provided every week. There is sufficient sunlight throughout the day. Looks like I need a fungicide? What's recommended and what else should I do?

Thanks!

I don't see any need for a fungicide there. No black spots or powdery mildew at all that I can see.

Is there any new growth at the tips of the branches? You may have what we call blind shoots. The cane grows out and fails to set a bud and just ends in a set of leaves with no new growth. Usually a small pruning at the tips will start it growing again. Just prune down to the next set of 5 leaves.

On the far right I see two dead canes. Those should be removed all the way down to green cane or to the crown if there is no green cane left. You can take out dead wood at any time of year. Clearing out dead canes encourages new growth and allows for better air flow in the plant to fend off diseases.

Thanks seilMI. I've followed your advice and will check again. What would you recommend on getting rid of bugs that are eating the leaves?

I don't spray for bugs myself. I don't like using chemicals and I live on the lake shore and don't want them to end up in my lake. Sp I'm no spray. However, if you choose to there are many good insecticides available but try to look for one that doesn't kill bees!
