My neighbor has offered to gift me her hosta for my area under pine trees, but first I need to see if it will survive acidic soil and complete shade.

If it is complete shade the hosta will not thrive, they prefer a neutral ph around 6.5-7.5, but since she is your neighbor and the hosta is growing, the ph of the soil is probably not problem.

It looks like Ventricosa,

I do not want to confuse you but what @crawgarden said would be correct in a zone 4, In your zone the sun cook hostas. My sister in Atlanta, Ga the sun is really strong her hostas were horrible. The more shade for her hostas the better.

I grow my Hostas in dark no sun shade and they are fine. Your issue is going to be moisture. If you can build the bed with a lot of compost and be ready to water once a week if you do not get a good rain shower it will be fine

Because you will be growing that hosta variety in shade it will look a lot better than that pic. It will not be bleached and cooked to death.

This is my Ventricosa on the left of the ornament that is 4' tall. This area does not get even a peak of sun and the hostas grow like weeds.

This may help with some companion plants to compliment the hosta
