Looking for Magic: Sage

By Sharon
October 16, 2012

We've been talking about the nutrition that hides in everyday spices. Aunt Bett always said, 'Look for the magic that hides in plants, look real close and you'll find it." It's the magic I'm looking for now in garden sage.

Thanks, Shirlee.

I love your daylily avatar. I've been meaning to tell you that. It has beautiful ruffles and such a soft soothing color. Normally yellows don't soothe, but this one does. Smiling

Yellow is not my first choice of colors, but this one has won my heart with the ruffles.
And I tell it so too. Big Grin Glad you enjoy.

Thanks a lot, Sharon Smiling I could swear the house was filling up with the warm down home smell of sage while I was reading this article. Makes me want to make dressing!

I just realized that I have some blue salvia (I believe it is May Night) but I don't believe that is the kind one would cook with.

Shirlee, yellow is not my first choice in flower color either even though I have several, but your avatar is a very pretty daylily.

Thanks for another interesting and informative article, Sharon,
I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you.

I like sage, in moderation, in my Thanksgiving cornbread dressing, it would not be the same without a bit of this pungent herb.

The Native American traditions of burning it to cleanse the air, mind and body is interesting too. I don't know if it works, but it is interesting.

Others also make a tea to relieve fever and sore throat.

A few leaves in the bath water is said to relieve sunburn.

Can you tell me what variety of sage you plant?

I just went out and chewed a leaf from a plant I had put in in the spring, called tri-colored, and it had almost no taste at all.

I was going to use it to make chicken breast Saltimbocca. Guess I will need to go shopping to find some with a bit more flavor.

Next year I would like to plant something a bit more tasty. Hilarious!

Wonderful informative article! Thanks, Sharon.

I use sage a lot. We usually cook a turkey breast every two weeks, and have some stuffing along with it.

Last year for the first time I tried Salvia elegans 'Golden Pineapple'. It's a beautiful ornamental, but also edible. I made grilled pork chops with grilled pineapple on the outside grill, and made stuffing with the sage. Delicious!

Hi Polly.
Thanks. I've never tried another sage for cooking. I'll have to remember your Golden Pineapple.

It has a very strong pineapple taste. I always grabbed a few leaves to eat when passing by. It's not a hardy perennial, though.

I didn't put the sage on the pineapple rings, just in the stuffing. Now I want it again. Maybe tomorrow. I love grilled fruit.
