Hi, I have a friend that has a large area with rounded boulders and smaller rounded rocks. There's soil in between the rocks, it's sandy and rocky. This area is in full sun and has good drainage. I think sempervivum would be great for this area. Any suggestions for some good ones for this location? We are in zone 7b. Thanks so much!

In Zone 7B you should be pretty good for most all. With your summer humidity in AR, I would give them some afternoon shade if possible.

I'd start with tectorum types (most smooth-leaved hybrids) , calcareums, heuffeliis, and the rollers should all be fine there. If you have only full sun, start with the heuffs and rollers and I think I would wait until FALL for all of this. They will make roots better in cooler weather.

A plan B would be to buy now and put them in pots in the shade and move them to their permanent sites in the fall. Even here in Oregon I lose plants transplanted in the summer.

Kevin, thank you so much! Now the hunt is on to find them around here. We may have to order online, any suggestions for good companies? Sometimes all you can find here are unnamed succulents and I would hate to purchase plants that could only be houseplants here. I am giving her some of my chicks as starters if she wants them.

Yes our site has a listed of recommended nurseries that will give you a huge variety of plants!

Semps are DEFINITELY NOT house plants. Don't ever think of them that way. They grow in the ALPS!! They do love life around rocks.

It's such fun to shop for plants! Try to get a diversity of types so you'll have different colored clumps in contrast to each other.

Hi Lynda, here is a list of great place to shop online. Some are for those in the European countries, others are for those in the United States. The thread "Succulent Nurseries" in Sempervivum forum
