I started some seeds of this plant last year, and transplanted into the ground late summer. I couldn't remember what the plant was, so I was hoping to identify it when it blooms. It did not bloom last year, and I cut it back early spring. It has come back with a vengeance, but still no bloom. I am hoping that someone here would recognize the plant by the leaves and stem. I know it does flower because I got it from a seed swap
I need to know whether it is worth keeping or not. I was not expecting it to get this tall - I thought it was going to be only 1-2 ft high. Definitely too tall for the spot I have it in.
It would have been a seed that I requested from a seed swap. I don't recall asking for any hibiscus, but a salvia is a good possibility. Guess I may just have to wait to see if it will ever flower to know.
I really have no idea but the leave do look like some of the Malvaceae family which includes hibiscus. Here is a list of native "Mallows". Even if it is not on the list, maybe some of the names may ring a bell.
I thought it may be an ageratum, but it is so much taller than most photos of ageratum that I have seen. I planted several other ageratums, but they were all about 12 inches tall.
I'm seeing a resemblance to Hibiscus but without flowers anything is a guess. A perennial will probably flower in the second year given the size of the plant. Look at the leaves on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Psyche ..
It wouldn't be the first time seed was mixed up, or a stray seed got into another. If you know who the seed came from you could ask if they had any Hibiscus seed, or if they recognise the plant.
Janet and Lin - thanks for your input. Guess I'll just have to wait until it flowers to find out for sure. I got over 100 different seeds from a seed swap, and I can't remember which container that plant came from. My labeling and tracking system needs some improvement.
