Yes I started breeding hosta at age 12 and did my PhD on the genetics of variegation in hosta! few people do their PhD on things from their back yard!

Great article Kevin! I have Delta Dawn, really like the intense yellow in the spring. Probably more convenient from the back yard, still a lot of number crunching and writing.

Rj,

Yes I did electron microscopy of all the various mutants plus genetic studies to show the segregation of plastome types. It was fun discovering these new things and I was able to work out the genetics of many of the traits of hosta from those crosses.

@JungleShadows, Kevin, you're a menace with pollen, LOL, great work!

I frankly don't know how you manage hybridizing so many things and so much of each, I can barely handle one hybridization emphasis this year (woodland Iris species), but then again I must devote lots of time combating rampant overgrowth after two years neglect, spent 5 hrs today contending with masses of bittersweet and other invasives. First pods opened up today on three Asian species of woodland Iris that I've been crossing, it is with excited anticipation of seeing results of one's work in a few years that keeps us going!

Interesting article!
57 cultivars, wow! sounds like about as many hostas as semps. Congrats on the award and write up Kevin, you've certainly earned it!

Mark,

This year I'm trying to retake the garden so I'm doing a few less things. It has been taking several hours each day to cross and the weeds are taking over some beds. Time to TAKE THEM BACK. OUT TO WEED!

Sol,

Yes I raised over 9 K variegated hosta seedlings. Still have a few crosses going on with them in some ultra-large and variegated seedlings.

I am literally spending entire days just crossing sempervivum right now. Of course it's high tide for semp blooms and other plants might peak at different times of the year, but even still I have trouble seeing how you could do that AND a myriad of other plant types.
Downright impressive!
