Hello,
I've lived in my home for a year and there's several roses that I have no idea how to care for. Last fall I made the mistake of doing really heavy pruning and while they survived they are growing all over the place and I have no clue how to figure out what to do with them. I live in Central Oregon where we have cold (snow/ice) in the winters and hot summers.

Today there were really long shoots growing straight up so I cut them off (not sure if I should have done this?).

I'm hoping you all can help me identify these roses and prescribe when and how I should prune them?
Currently they are all on a drip irrigation system, but I don't know if this is the best watering schedule for them?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Thank You!

Could you maybe get close-up photos of the blooms?

And ... the one with no blooms on it ... are there any buds? Did it bloom earlier?

Thanks!! I appreciate any advice or info. See the photos below.
So there's six plants in the original post, I'll call them #1-6.

For the photos below the first two are of rose #1.

The third photo is rose #2. This rose had a few blooms that were yellow orangish. I think it hasn't bloomed much because of how severely I pruned it. Also it has shoots popping up everywhere around it which are very annoying (and sharp!) to constantly remove.

The fourth photo is bloom on rose #3

Fifth photo is a bloom on rose #4

Sixth photo is a bloom on rose #5

Photos seven and eight are a new bloom and clusters about to bloom on rose #6.
Hope that makes sense!

Have they all bloomed this year? Were they all that red color? I think you may have root stock coming up and the oriinal varieties are gone now.

The red/purple looks like either "Stormy Weather" or "Night Owl", both climbers that bloom in tight sprays like that. One ( I can't remember off hand witch one) is packed full of thorns and the other has the thorns evenly spaced along the canes. The other looks like a Hybred Tea of some sort.
It's a rose!!! It has nothing to do with life and death.

Thanks! They have all bloomed this year although the rose in pic 2 of my first post (pic 3 of my second post) only had a couple yellow, light orange blooms, but it's likely due to my very heavy pruning.

I'm just trying to figure out what these plants need. Do they want to be pruned and manicured or left to grow and climb? I feel like they're not getting the care they need.

I agree with Seil, though, that some of those may be rootstock plants.

I think I would deadhead them (cut off the faded blooms) and see if they repeat in a month or two. If they DON'T repeat, and want to be huge climbers, you have rootstock plants ... almost certainly 'Dr. Huey' See:

And be sure to look at the photos. You DON'T want Dr. Huey.

Yep. Sure looks like at least a couple of these are Dr. Huey. Thanks!

Some of us actually like Dr Huey - usually those of us who have plenty of space for him.

Yeah, I have three of him that converted, which I've relegated to a dry hillside and fence. He doesn't get much attention, and tends to get blackspot and lose his leaves, but he's a profuse bloomer for a few weeks.

I understand what you're looking for, GardenGyro, but we need to ID the roses before we can tell you what they need. There are many kinds of roses and they don't all need the same things. To be honest, at this point I would not prune anything. Not pruning will not hurt them in any way but if you prune something that shouldn't be pruned you're out for a whole year. I would just snip off the dead blooms, weed around them, mulch them and just keep them watered this year. And watch them this season. Take notes and pictures on how each rose behaves. Pictures of leaves, canes, buds, semi open blooms and fully open blooms and of the entire plant top to bottom. We need more information before we can even begin to ID them and give you the answers that you want.

Once again, Seil says what I was thinking, and saves me the trouble of all that typing!

Thanks everyone! The main thing was identifying the several that all looked the same and are growing kind of wild, and after your comments and some further research, I do indeed believe that 3 of my 5 roses are Dr. Huey. I think I'll keep at least one of them and try and train it to grow up along a wire panel. The other two roses are still unknown but definitely not Dr. Huey. I pruned them heavily last fall so I'll do minimal pruning on them this year, and figure out what I want to do with them later.

Does anyone have any guess on this plant below? It gets a rose-like yellow/orange flower and grows super aggressive! It is popping up all over the area where it is planted and has extremely dense and sharp thorns. Unfortunately it only had a couple flowers on it this spring because of my pruning and I didn't get any pics.
Thanks again!

Maybe Yellow Lady Banks'? Although I don't think that has orange in it. Austrian Copper does though. Can you describe the flowers? How many petals? How big? In clusters?

The leaves don't look like Lady Banks to me, but I suspect that it is an Old Garden Rose.
