Hello all,
First of all let me say I've seen quite a bit from this forum and it's been super helpful. I am the new proud owner of a beautiful monstera borsigiana albo cutting which I am trying to propagate. Amazingly she came in the mail today and was not desiccated despite the near 100 degree temps we've been having. The seller stated that they had been propagating the plant in water and recommended I continue to do so...but with the horror stories of root rot I've seen on here I was going to pot into soil unless there was some unforseen dehydration issue that occurred. These are the roots from the auction photograph and when it arrived (am I correct in saying this is an aerial root with smaller roots growing on it?) the smaller outer roots were even longer. I don't smell anything bad and nothing feels "mushy" by my judgement.
Currently she's sitting in a mix of 1 part orchid part/1 part pumice/1 part charcoal with some handfuls of succulent soil thrown in. I watered thoroughly and I sat her up on a bookshelf to chill out for the evening before she goes next to my large humidifier tomorrow. She'll be about 2.5 feet away from my Amazon grow light I have on other plants.
A few questions:
1. Around the node itself there was some darker tissue that was soft but nothing black like the root rot photos I've seen (See photo, she came wrapped in a damp paper towel so I also thought this might just be moisture). Should I be monitoring this cut end closely with concerns for rot?
2. Is the node buried sufficiently in the soil?
3. As I currently lack any sort of actual plant related support I stuck a chopstick into the soil and wrapped a rubber band loosely around it to act as support for the plant. There shouldn't be any problems associated with that right?
4. And most importantly...am I doing this right?
I have plans to water weekly unless she starts showing me she's thirstier!
Insert leaf porn here because it's pretty
Thanks!
