It is possible to clean the seeds quickly, too, without all that nasty fermentation. I've used Trudi Davidoff's method, and it worked great for me.

Unfortunately, Trudi's wintersown site was hacked recently, and she's in the process of re-doing it. Now you have to access older material by way of the wayback machine. But, the above link should work.

Very interesting Karen! I will try that next year. I used the fermentation method this year - being somewhat absent minded I forgot about it for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure out why my house smelled so ... musty. Plus the seeds don't lift up in a neat skin when you have to scrub them off the bowl.
