I have a philodendron that was very small when i put it out back in the spring. I have been bringing all my plants inside & when i seen my little P.micans or velvet leaf,i couldn't believe how long it had grown.But for some reason all of my plants doubled or more in size this growing season.
I have a good many HB's & they won't hardly go back where they were last winter because they have gotten so big that & lack of room for another HB is reason for putting it on a trellis.

The plant has grown long thick (sucker roots) whatever plants grow to grip things to grow up trellis's or fences etc...The roots are already so long & thick i am going to have to use clips to attach plant to trellis until it grows new ones to wrap around trellis as it grows.My question is will cutting off the ones that are so thick & some are at least 6-8 inches long,will cutting them off make new ones grow to grip the trellis. I have some clips & ties to use for now.I just need advice about the ones that have been growing all summer.I don't have a picture of them now,but i will take one to download and post tonight or tomorrow.

The long aerial roots are trying to get to the soil. I wouldn't cut those off. And I don't think you need to clip the plant to your trellis, just wind it around. I put the trellis (which is actually part of a broken storage rack) in this pot a few months ago. Is this similar to what you had in mind?

That's exactly what i had in mind.I have 2 plants one is a plain green heart leaf and the other is the velvet leaf (Mican) i believe is it's botanical name i don't have my plant notebook close.

The velvet leaf is about 2 or 3 feet long.



I should put the trellis in the soil & plant in front of it,so the roots won't get damaged? Or is it ok to put the trellis in last as long as i keep in mind it's going to be placed in the pot when i plant the philodendron?

I've done a similar thing in several pots this summer and each setup required the trellis to go in after the plant. You won't hurt a Philo if you smush or break a few roots sticking it in. Then wind the pieces around it so it looks how you want.

This plant is much smaller and I used a shelf from the same broken storage rack thing. Just set this up about a month ago when I got this new baby. I have a little Micans also that's been potted in the same way.

J, just curious how your plants are climbing? While inside this winter, I've got several pots of this Philo and there are pieces clinging to the walls in several places. The people aren't the only ones climbing the walls with cabin fever this winter!

Because it was winter when i started thinking about what to do with the plants,i haven't re-potted yet was waiting until spring. My heating system is awful about making the air dry,i spend all winter misting my plants (i have many that like high humidity) i even have to water a lot because the plants that aren't in HB's are in terra tocca and they dry out at an amazingly fast rate in this dry air.I am going to try to change everything over to plastic pots.

I will post a picture when i do re-pot & let you know how it does,it should grow good in a shady spot outside.

Can i ask what do you fertilizer your philo with? I have a few different NPK ratio's but when re-potting i like to add a slow-release like osmocote indoor/outdoor,would that be ok since it doesn't bloom the low P shouldn't be a problem.My Hoya's i use 15-30-15 and have started getting good blooming results.

Hi Jojoe, I do not grow philodendron..just some pothos. I find that I can contain my pothos indoors and not worry about water by planting them in water gel beads and keeps their size easier to manage. Maybe it will work for your philodendrons too so you will not have to water often.

Sorry I did notice your fertilizer question earlier. I don't fertilize this kind of plant at all. Wow it took spring forever to, well, spring - finally! One huge plant is still inside, but I took the smaller one outside today. These were potted on these trellises in June.

Philodendrons and Pothos are the two plants I can grow... and grow.... and grow! They love me!

I water them once per week, and mist their leaves every couple of weeks.
These plants are the easiest to take care of, out of any of the plants I've ever had.

I have a pothos outside that is out of control. The hanging vines are now longer than 12 feet, hanging from the eaves of the house and now into the garden looking for soil. I took off some roots that were stuck to the cushion of my lawn chair! It's out of control because I let it. It looks like I have enough to start a brand new pot of it this fall.

Yes, what's not to like about a plant that is so giving of itself? I've shared this with several people this summer.

Had you done anything in this direction yet, Joejoe? Everyone has stuff that never gets done for some reason, understandable if not.

In the interest of taking up less room inside this winter, I removed one of the tall branches this plant was using. So fun to coax/guide the vines, a few mintes about once a week.

I have had to plant my philo's in a hanging pot simply because of the lack of room on the floor.I am hoping it will do good this winter hanging in the bathroom.That is one room that gets very little light and i mostly have plants that need more light.I have tried a few plants in the bathroom but with only 1 small window nothing does well in there.I am hoping my philo's will do good in there.I have a small regular green leaf & a velvet leaf that's almost doubled in size this summer.Hopefully they will be good pot fellows.I will have to take a recent picture of them to show yall.

That sound perfectly fine. I moved a LOT of my plants to hanging baskets this summer since 'footprint' space is not in abundance and I bring way too many plants inside for winter. I also combined a lot of plants like you did for the same reason. In the last pic I posted, there's a Monstera on a wood pole (board) with 3 kind of Pothos cuttings and some rhizomatous Begonias added a few months ago when repotted. I also started using the sides of the hanging pots by poking holes in them and sticking cuttings in the holes, which has been going well, lots of fun.

Something like Philodendron or Pothos that has stems that eventually get much larger in diameter would not be as good candidates for the sides of pots, should someone be interested, but great for the "growing out of the top" part. I don't intend for any of these pots to have much longevity, nor will I insist that the combos will always be the same, since repotting will be necessary in a year, two tops. So at that point, all of the stuff growing out of the side holes will be turned into new cuttings to 'start over.'

I sadly am lacking Philodendron hederafolia(I thought it was scandens, butt the database says otherwise) I have had cuttings before, but gave them away, and i even had a brasil cultivar, but killed it! i also gave my last pothos away for a couple of air plants(tisslandia ionantha

I think that's a pretty good trade. Bet'cha get some new Pothos cuttings very soon!

I'm thinking of combining these 2 plants in a hanging basket.




Since I don't want to give up the climbing aspect, I'm going to use a roll of wire to turn the hanging arms into a trellis. If I use extra-long, home-made hanging arms also made out of wire, it should give them enough height that it would take a while for them to fill it up. There's a hanging pot with really long home-made wire arms, photo-bombing the main plant in this pic, on the right. I may try to find an existing pot to squeeze them into this way...



Here's some cool aerial roots on some Pothos and Monstera climbing up a wood board support. Scindapsus is just starting to get in on that action too.



Mere lack of space isn't going to stop me from adding more cool plants. Just need to be creative about making the existing pots more useful. What other things are folks doing with their vines? To save space?

Tiffany, Here is my monster potted pothos. I used to have 3 of these. I have started 4 pots from this remaining plant. Looks like I will have enough for at least 2 more from this. I had to take it down to untangle the vines after I got them out of the nearby soil. Today I unwound them from the base of the chair. As soon as it stops raining and I get a day off, I will start the new pot.

Yeah, that rocks! I just love vines in general. So adaptable to about anybody's growing style.
