I've done a similar thing in several pots this summer and each setup required the trellis to go in after the plant. You won't hurt a Philo if you smush or break a few roots sticking it in. Then wind the pieces around it so it looks how you want.

This plant is much smaller and I used a shelf from the same broken storage rack thing. Just set this up about a month ago when I got this new baby. I have a little Micans also that's been potted in the same way.
