Use Fish Aquarium Water for Your Houseplants

By Skiekitty

For people who keep freshwater aquariums: when you do your water changes, keep the water for your houseplants or take it outside for your garden. Fish Emulsion is a nice way of saying fish poo, and a lot of expensive organic fertilizers are "fish emulsion". Why spend $20 for a bottle of fish poo when you can get it for free from your aquarium?

I tip my hat to you. In Canada, the best shopping deals are always right after Christmas (Boxing Day). Last Christmas, we replaced our old 30 Gal with this beautiful 72bow. Got it for 1/2 price, so it was a great deal. I don't know anything about fish, but we do have quite a few different kinds in there. The weirdest ones the kid got are called Ghost Fish and they are transparent. Very weird

I just finished fertilizing a chrysanthemum with about three dozen dead guppies. Between my mother overfeeding them while I was away and me trying to rescue them by putting them in clean water, they were doomed. I'm upset, but I have enough that survived to repopulate the tank. Sad

Joanna - Those are called glass catfish. They're an asian catfish, schoolers, they eat insects in the wild. Great fish. Too bad you're so far away from Ontario. There's an AWESOME fish store in Kingston that's basically a fish warehouse. I used to take the 2 ferries from NY to Wolf Island CA to Kingston just go to fish shopping.

Renee - More than likely overfeeding them. Fish can go a long time w/o eating, 2-3 weeks easily. So if you're gone for a weekend, no worries. And guppies breed so rapidly, you will have new ones in a hurry. Smiling But they don't like overly ammoniated water.

sorry everyone, but I'm an avid fishhead & will ramble on & on about fish given half the chance... *Blush* *Blush* *Blush*

Actually, I don't think fish emulsion is made from the water and poop. It contains fish, mostly waste parts leftover after cleaning. Hence, the stink.

I would say be careful on using on edible plants if you have used medications or ph adjusters or on any plant if you put salt in your water or algae killers.
