Thanks so much for the ID. I thought about placing some
of my pictures in the database but needed a name for them.
I haven't checked but it may already be in there.
Thanks, Janet,
It's amazing to get a reply all the way from across the pond in England!
From what I can tell, mine is like the Florida Ruffled Fern. I don't know
of another additional name to go after 'Nephrolepis exaltata'. I also have
the mother plant in a much larger pot that needs dividing and potting up.
Looks like I'll be giving away several because of space in the garden room.
I had to shout loudly to be heard all the way across the pond!
I've found a lot more named cultivars than there is in the Plant Files here Louise, yours has a distinct habit and fronds which doesn't look like Fluffy Ruffles to me.
I found one called Hill's Boston Fern - Nephrolepis exaltata Hillii which in the photo given looks more like yours, it's difficult finding any other good photo though.
This is an antique variety from the 1930’s and is a ruffled bigger version of the Boston Fern on steroids. The fronds are 4 inches wide and up to 48 inches long with very ruffled, pale green foliage when new turning dark green when mature.
JR,
I measured mine and the fronds are 3 1/2" wide at the most and the
longest frond is 20". This plant has just now started an unexpected
growth period, much more so than before. I'll give it more TLC and
see what it grows into.
Thanks for the info,
Louise
Thanks for the info links.
Mine isn't like the upright one in the first link. It will take a bit
of searching the other site to choose any. My fern is a soft
green, feathery feeling and very thick and compact looking.
The search goes on..........

I think it's wrong too Tee, but I'm not sure it's the same as Louise's. A google shows most Fluffy Ruffles (except Larry's) as upright plants, the name 'upright' says it, but Larry's is cascading.
I looked at his link that you sent and it is identified as 'upright' ,
(mine isn't) and his foliage looks darker and glossier than mine.
Thanks for your help. Maybe the answer will be just around
the corner.
Louise
There are many cultivars of Nephrolepis. I had one called Florida Ruffle Fern back in the 1980's that was a gift from my mom and it had the more upright habit rather than cascading. I wish I still had my pictures but I lost the fern in a winter freeze and lost my old pictures when my laptop crashed a couple of years ago.
I have one N. exaltata that's a cascading type, cultivar name 'Delilah':
JR,
My camera is hooked up to my computer now. I'll have to wait
until I shut down to remove it (I guess ?)safely. I'll take a closer
picture and post it.
It depends on what type of camera you have Louise, my last camera had to be safely removed by clicking on an icon put on the bottom bar. The current one, Nikon D90, I was able to select for it to automatically remove itself so I can just pull the cable out after switching the camera off.
JR,
I shut down, took the pictures and will post them here. I didn't realize how much
the plant needed grooming. It was on a high metal shelf in the garden room with
several big plants on the floor. I took it to the kitchen to take the pictures. Maybe,
you can tell more about it . There is a closeup of the frond and then a couple of
the larger view.
Let me know what you see.
Louise
