I'm growing bush green beans right now. Can't remember which type but probably one of the "Kentucky" or "blue lake" types. I'm starting to have a bunch end up flat so I'd prefer to avoid that next year. All I found with a quick Google search is that sometimes the seeds aren't exactly what they should be and then that plant produces flat beans (I think mine are all coming from 1 or 2 plants). Despite being Bush beans they've grown clear up the fence and are spreading along it now.

For next year, I'm fine growing Bush or pole beans. I don't honestly eat them but my husband does and my dog loves frozen green beans. I'm not picky on color either. Most will be frozen or dehydrated (a great treat for my dog). It would be cool to have different colored flowers (I've got white this year) or different colored beans (the green ones sometimes hide and I miss them until they get huge). Suggestions?

I've grown Dragon Tongue beans before and they were good and colorful. Rare Seeds carries it along with other colorful varieties.

Your choices are vast. There are many varieties of beans with round pods and available in green, yellow, purple and striped. Less choice when restricted to pole beans but there are quite a few. Flat podded beans are available but choices are fewer. For a round pod green bean, Contender is easy to grow and dependable. I prefer Amethyst as a round pod bush purple bush bean. I like Seychelles as a round podded pole bean. I don't grow wax beans. Browse through the beans database and read grower comments. All of us have different growing conditions those that perform under different conditions will stand out.
