Ann, you are about a mile away from me when traveling that route.

Thanks again, ladies for all the help.

Now I'm wondering if there are enough little guys with Japanese names to make a collection. I have some Japanese maples in the area. That would be cool.

'Lakeside Cupcake' is a very slow grower. That was last year's picture. This year I finally got a second eye and the leaves got slightly smaller, but it's nowhere near a mini. I'm on the wrong computer to post a picture from this year, but last year I was ready to give up on it.

Glad I'm not the only one who finds 'Lonesome Dove' a slow grower.

Polly, well definitely Kifukurin Ko Mame and Kinbotan. If you allowed for hostas a varying sizes you could add in Fujibotan. There's another of mine that has a definite Japanese name, but I can't think which one. Is Ani Machi a Japanese name? Might be.

Yes it is Ann, If I am not mistaken it means 'Geisha'. I don't think it is a mini, I had several but they hate the heat.

I think that's what I'm going to do then, Japanese name themed ones. Thanks all!

'Ani Machi' is usually sold under the incorrect nursery name 'Geisha', but it doesn't translate to Geisha. Ani Machi is a Japanese variety that someone brought to the west. There was a previous hosta registered as 'Geisha', but it is believe to no longer exist anywhere and they were not the same. I have 'Ani Machi' and it's not a mini, but isn't large either. Polly - I don't know if you frequent the Hallson chat list at all, but we've been working on an index to all the hostas for which informational threads have been posted. http://www.perennialnursery.co... It now lists over 450 varieties and because it is indexed it's possibly a good way to make note of Japanese named hostas.

Pixie Vamp is another nice little hosta, and it has dark purple flower scapes that look almost black. I can't remember, but I think the flowers are a dark purple, too.
