Ok here's my problem. It's gettin gcolder and my daylilies are ducking for cover LOL
and I want to bring them with me to RI so I don't want to miss any of them. I have already started digging up the peonies & iris and I know they will be safe.

BUT, can I dig my dayliles and put them up in peat or some other type of media Just
for a couple of weeks. We might be going to RI over Christams Or I will ship them to
be potted up there. I know I have done this before with others but,I did not really care
about them..These I LOVE

Advise Please
I'm all ears!

PS There are about 75 or so to get dug up yet Blinking

Are you moving to RI??? If its just a visit, I don't understand why you would want to dig them up and take them with you.

We are moving to RI. And I want to take as many of my plants as I can with me. Once I get there
I have the use of a large greenhouse to keep them all in and I can pot them once we are there. But,
we are waiting on a offer on our house. We have someone that wants it but,she is working out financing
BUT, I have to run home today and spruce up the place for another Couple that LOVE the house from
the outside and I know once they are in they will love it more. BUT,its getting late to getting my plants
moble.

Oh gosh. I don't know what to tell you. You probably can pot them and store them in the greenhouse. Maybe someone else will have some ideas for you.

I would think they would be fine for a couple of weeks in peat. The ones they sell at the big box stores in the bags are in Peat (I think that's what it is) and who knows how long they are in those bags. Or you could dig them and put them in plastic grocery bags with a some of the soil until you know if you are going to ship them or take them with you.

I would cut them back drastically and put them in plastic bags (the grocery store type). You could then put peat around the roots, OR just ship them bareroot. When they get there, whomever is receiving them could then put the roots only, in water, changing the water every 3rd day. Make sure that you add a name tag in each bag. I also write on the outside of the bag. I have kept dormant bareroot daylilies in a bag for a month, sprinkling them with water every so often until I was ready to replant them.

One warning about greenhouses. Some daylilies are dormant and need to have COLD for some part of the winter. I forget exactly how that is done, but I know hybridizers like Lee Pickles has them in and out of a greenhouse so that they will die back and stay dormant (so they will bloom)

Best wishes. RI is nice.

Funny you should mention Christmas Cactus. I have a small plant that my neighbor gave me last Christmas. The plant has not been watered hardly all year and has been dropped several times. Like an Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. This is my kinda plant after all the fussing in the garden, it is very forgiving and will not pout if you neglect it during the growing season.. I re-potted it last week and vowed to buy six more!

Shannon, your plants are way too happy!! Try some neglect. Rolling on the floor laughing
