Root Cellars and Bright City Lights

The last time I made my way out of the darkness of a root cellar was in 1952 and I vowed then I'd never return. So why is it that now, 60 years later, I'm longing for a root cellar?

Thanks for another great story Sharon! We obviously have gone a long way away from root cellars, much to our detriment. Reading about how many things your grandmother kept in the cellar, I wondered how she found the time to prepare them all, but she didn't have TV or a computer to distract her from her all-important task of providing for her family. I'm on my own now and the few things I make, such as some jam when I have some good ingredients, are more for fun than necessity. I used to freeze things when the kids were young, but a power outage would have KO-ed them! The good old days - do we have to get to our age to appreciate them?

Hi Sue,
Your comment made me try to remember things my grandmother did when she relaxed. She pieced quilts around the fire in the evenings, she quilted during winter, but I don't remember that she read much and of course there was little technology so she didn't talk on the phone or watch TV. I remember the music though, there was always music. So you are right, she was always providing for her family.

A root cellar is simply for me a dream wish for my plants; in bringing my plants in for the winter, I began to think of old cellars. It's as you say, I only have myself to provide for now, so there isn't much food storage anymore. Maybe we do have to get to this age to realize the importance of things long gone.

It's great to hear from you again. Happy almost December!
