I have already put in my first order of the 2011 season.. I just called in an order to Roses Unlimited. I'm gonna blame Zuzu for this.. it's all her fault. She posted pictures of her Lady X.. a big-time wish rose for me, so I called up RU to see if they'll have it for 2011. And they do! So here's my list for them for May, 2011:

I see posts like this, and I get tickled and excited. I miss the days when I could pick new roses to add to the collection. Alas the garden is peaked on roses, and now with water prices skyrocketing, I've been removing some. Looks like some great choices from what I know Toni. I remember I use to keep up really well on the new names too, but alas...that has faded too. The roses I have will be the roses in my garden when I pass on. My rose collection is complete. Unless one dies because a dripper clogged or something...that hasn't happened in the pass 5 years, since I switched to a new type of drip nozzle. I enjoy all of you posting the pictures of your new roses as they bloom. I know that anticipation of watching the buds form, then the sepals peel back...then the blooms. I live vicariously through you.

Oh, you're not that old... My mom, who's in her mid 60s, still goes out & chugs away in the garden, bemoaning the gophers and now the deer (they ate the buds & flowers of the two rose bushes I took her a few weekends ago). And I really need to get a drip system going.. I'm going to get a drip system that is converted from a standard wall faucet as my underground system is destroyed. Plus putting the all the mulch will REALLY help all the roses in the back.

But, enough about that.. just put in an order with Palatine. I think that this will probably all I can afford for the pre-ordering for now. Here's my list with Palatine:

Your right. I'm not that old. But I'm not getting any younger either. And I do still take care of my entire gardening. It's not just roses either. It's roses, and peaches, and orange trees, and more roses. It's called planning for my future capabilities. I think one should think about that if the plan on staying in the house they are in, until the die Right down to how long I want my next roof to last (I got a 50 year warranty, parts and labor...I will never have to replace my roof again). The next paint job will hopefully be my last too. I've got 10 more years left before the house will need painted again. Just watching for my future abitlities. I've already had a quadruple bi-pass, and I'm diabetic. These things must be taken into account.

By the way...I had a little excitement this morning too. Had eggs boiling in water and forgot all about them. Was out working in the garden. Mowing, light pruning, what have you...all the sudden I hear my smoke alarm going off. Thank good there was just lots and lots of smoke, and a few exploded eggs. This created a new project for me to do. Clean the kitchen. I'm half done...all the egg is cleaned up anyway.

Aren't housekeepers suppose to move your fridge and clean behind it every so often. I need to have a talk with mine. I think the last time the fridge was moved, I did it....gritting teeth!!!

I have exploded eggs more times than I care to remember, Alan. They're so easy to forget on the stove.

I'm not placing a Palatine order this year, for a change. I think I already have everything of interest to me on the site this year. I like Lorise, but Pickering will carry that one too, and there are a few other things I want from Pickering.

I wish Pickering would get its act together and start taking orders. They were supposed to start in August, and the cutoff date for fall orders is September 30th, so there's going to be a very limited window for ordering. I've made my choices already, but I won't even know if they're carrying my choices this year until they update the site.

Did they change management? They use to be an awesome company to order from!

Which one, Alan? Palatine and Pickering haven't changed, as far as I know.

I don't think so. I hope not. They did mention some financial problems last year and said they were going to offer more own-root roses so that they could cut costs.

And hooray for them, incidentally, for admitting that growing own-root roses is a cost-cutting measure. I get so annoyed with nurseries that sell own-root roses at the same prices as grafted ones or at even higher prices. I really appreciate Chamblee's prices in that regard. They're just what they should be for the roses they're offering.

I placed a small order from Palatine yesterday for Feb. delivery, also waiting for Pickering.

None of my roses from Pickering made it, but that's gonna be 100% my fault, not theirs: 1) ordered WAY too late, 2) kept the earth bare around the canes and they ended up frying in the extreme summer we had. So I can't blame them.

Now I'm going through my list from Burlington. GAH! Someone help me, my hobbies have gone haywire!!

When I get rooted cuttings, I always keep them in a pot the first year, so I can move them to partial shade or whatever when it starts getting real hot. Then, in the fall, if all is going well with them, I will transplant them into the ground. Just something to think about. I get much better success rates that way. Gives there roots time to go deeper in the pot, and gives them better odds of surviving in future years.

That's what I do too.

I tried the rooted cuttings in the pots last year with 13 roses. 2 made it through the winter, 1 made it through this year. However, all the rooted cuttings I put immediately in the ground survived pretty nicely and came back this year (for the most part.. only lost like 3 out of 20, which, for me is pretty good).

I lose cuttings if I put them in the ground before they get pretty big. They don't die, I just can't find them. Perhaps if I weeded more often...

I lose them too, Porkpal. Other things, including weeds, tend to grow up around them and obscure them. The chief culprits here are poppies, which spring up everywhere.

oh how I would love to live in an area where beautiful "weeds" like poppies overran my yard! I have 2 roses (I *think* 2) who are totally engulfed by an agastache who's rather enthusiastic about growing.. tag said that it'd get 18" x 18". Damned thing is about 4'wide by 3' tall. Need to transplant that.. maybe Sunday I'll do that!

I want to get Cafe Ole, Magic Carrosel, Summer Song (if I can find it other than through Pickering), Vista (I already have it, but I love it!), Winter Magic (same w/this one.. maybe I'll just get more Sweet Arlene instead), Silk Hat, Red Scentsation, & Rainbow’s End. Just sent an EM to Burlington asking about these. *sigh* I love spring time.. but I'd love it more if I actually had seasons when they're supposed to be seasons! Last night, my chiropractor registered 39 degrees.. it was 64 degs in the bedroom when we went to bed last night and we had to shut the window.. brr!

I don't think you can even get Summer Song from Pickering. Unless they update that info, it still says "no US sales."

I bought mine from Hortico last year. Palatine also started carrying it a year ago and they're still offering it this year.

I was just on Palatine yesterday and didn't see it????????????????????? WTH!!!!! I'm gonna be SOO mad if I missed it!

OK, still says Sold Out. *whew* Feel better, but in a bad way. LOL!!!
