I like Exploding Galaxy, but will probably not get it at that price.

To me, there comes a point where just too much ego is the price, or you have a lily that wont increase. Or....maybe you paid too much for your business....;-x.

I have doubts about their hardiness and at these prices I'm not taking a chance. I bought several from Frank Smith in years past and the only one that really performs well is Princess Diana. Most were too tinder with low bud counts and little increase. Nothing but disappointment. I quit buying from the Salters some years ago for the same reason. Beautiful flowers in Florida, but not worth a nickle north of Georgia.

Thats interesting about the Salters, they dont protect their plants at all from the freezing weather. They either make it or they dont. We dont have that much different weather than Ga. I thought. Guess I thought wrong. Confused

I don't know about the Salter's daylilies, I'd have to check my records, but I do know how I feel about the price of the new introductions. Eeeeeeek!!!!.. There's only been one daylily that really caught my eye and was outrageously expensive and that was the 2012 intro by Larry Grace, Dr. Stump. Granted yellow is my favorite daylily color, but this "garden" picture said it just may be a beauty in real life (and I'm not overly fond of teeth). It was originally sold for $300.00 a SF and was sold out by fall.

Pam, we are in Northwest GA. about 50 miles NW of Atlanta. It does get cold here with January being our coldest month. It is not uncommon for us to have temperatures in the single digits, but usually our lows stay in the teens to low 20's range. Most daylily types do fine here, but we have had a few evergreens that were tender here, struggled, and finally died. We do not have any daylilies with Pete Harry's name attached but have numerous of Frank Smith and the Salters' introductions that thrive here. We brought home more of the Salters' intros today. I will post that information on the Salter thread.

The southern half of GA is much milder. We were in Middle GA today for a daylily meeting. The leaves were still on the trees there. I am from "southern" Middle GA. There was always such a stark difference in what would be growing when I went home and how all the plant material looked here in the winter.

Since we've been to the Salters together, this is no news to you, but what like about going out there is just the way Jeff loves his flowers. Its like a kid saying....I just want to play. Doesnt seem to much care about the flowers as a business, just loves to be amungst them, cross them, and do it all again next year. If you can get her talking, Liz is fun to hear what she has to say about different things. Very knowledgable about dayliles and the ppl involved and especially history. Thats been my experience out there at least.

Pam, I am so glad that we have been to their garden and were able to see and talk to them in their garden. It really makes a difference when you can be with the hybridizers in their domain and not just in a meeting setting. Today they were so relaxed at this meeting, more than I have seen them at any meeting. They are the guest speakers at this daylily club each December. David talked to Jeff after the auction. They are going to donate daylilies for our upcoming 2014 Spring Region 5 Meeting auction which will be in NW GA. Hybridizers are a valuable resource of information and most times willing to share their knowledge and experiences with other daylily growers.

Doris I agree Liz And Jeff were very relaxed. Normally Liz sits idly by and let's Jeff make his presentation and doesn't say a whole lot unless he asks a question. Today she was commenting and laughing with him about some of the jokes he was making. I had to leave before Liz made her presentation, unfortunately. But my wife was able to stay behind for the auction. I made out very well. It was good to see a full house. But with miss Eula's cooking who would miss.
The Salters are great ppl you just have to spend a little time with them and get them to talking.

Well, finally took the plunge and ordered 'Exploding Galaxy' and 'Rossens Best Edge'. I had a momentary lapse of reason you might say. While talking to Pete he said he probably should have asked a lot more for EG, but has never seen a $300 DL live up to the hype. So being superstitious he put it at $ 275. His guarentee was if when it blooms and it looks like any other DL you have ever seen and does not live up to description he will give a full refund, no questions. Being that I live in zone 8a, I think I can expect very similar plant characteristics to what he sees. Of course he also said he has been selling them to ppl all over the US.
We shall see. Also got a great bonus.

I keep debating on ordering or not. I may just wait and get a fan of James Hall's EXPLODING GALAXY (if he orders the collection like usual). But I keep looking at the 1st and 4th dips.

Michele, that would be great. I was tempted to order the whole dip collection for myself. I was trying not to give my wife a heart attack, lol.

Bob, how do you already know what your bonus will be? Last year I ordered two new intros from Pete and when the box was delivered I only got the two intros. The packing slip mentioned a bonus, but there was no bonus included.. I debated for a long time but finally called and asked about the bonus since the packing slip had indicated there was supposed to bonus. His website states that they send a bonus with every order. I had other friends who also ordered from Pete and they didn't get bonuses either. I was told that they were going to ship the bonus plants later. This did not make sense to me that they would incur additional shipping charges to send bonus plan later. I did get my bonus plant but my friends never were sent bonuses. I do understand that bonus plants are at the discretion of the seller but if they advertise on the website that bonus plants are included with every order, then I think they should honor their promises.
