Hello Everyone,
I just acquired the plant the other day, & found someone with another color variety of it on the same day. I am still trying to acquire a start of that one as well. here are photos. Thanks again for helping me ID this plant, JRsbugs. It indeed looks to be a Thai Hybrid. The others are different variations of Caladium Bi-Color I think. I am going to post all of the varities I have on the Caladium forum later. I have about 12 different color variations.

The leaves are almost a perfect triangle with some ruffling.

Here is a new leaf pushing it's way out.

If needed, I can take further photos showing the underside of the leaf, & the petiole up close.

I don't know if it's an Alocasia or not but it sure is pretty! It reminds me of Caladium.

It is some sort of plant related to the elephant ears or caladiums. I am going to try to propagate it, as well as hybridize it with another variety I found of this same type of plant later.

Hello everyone,
The Syngonium podophyllum does not fit since this plant grows from a tuber almost exactly like caladiums. I assume it is a closely related aroid. I have tried placing plants for ID in the Aroid forum, & got much better responses here. I will add it there later.

You have what appears to be a Caladium bicolor in the same pot, it's very variable but the leaf shape doesn't look like correct. Is the other plant the one you mentioned being a different colour variety? That does look like C. bicolor

http://eol.org/pages/1082357/o...

The shape of the leaf is more like a Caladium Thai Hybrid ..

They both look like Thai Hybrid Caladiums to my eyes.

No the other color variation has not been acquired yet. It is a variation of the chocolate Thai hybrid I saw on the link you gave me.

From some of the pages I have read about hybridizing these plants, I have an idea of how to do it, but I have some questions.
If you have a plant blooming, perhaps you could make a photo tutorial?
1-I am wondering how long you can save pollen once you collect it from the donor plant?
2-How can you go about collecting the pollen?
3-How do you know when to pollinate the receiving plant?
4-Do Caladiums' Berries have chemicals to prevent germination as well as the other alocasias & colocasias?

Thanks Evan. I just posted this same message on her Caladium society thread, so I'm on it! HEHE! What's your obsession (plant wise) I love the aroids, & yes I know that is a huge list of plants. You should see all the pictures of my garden now, & I only have about 50' to work with. HEHE! Is there a way to post multiple photos, or whole photo albums at once?

BTW I am living in Tumaco, Colombia in South America. I am basically collecting wild plants here. The pictures are all of those.

Hi Noel,
I like Aroids as well, although being in z6a, I've a short growing season so am always on the lookout for those that naturally go dormant or can be coaxed. I immediately noticed what's in the background of you first image and can't wait to see more photos of your collection.

FYI you can add your location, hardiness zone, a signature line and other things by going to "Your Profile", in the blue band, at the very top of every page.

Evan,
I am uploading my photos to my skydrive account on Hotmail. 137 photos. I do not have the patience to do that 1 at a time, so you can see them there. I'll load the link once it is uploaded tonight.

It does help to know the location, I wasn't sure you were living in Colombia although it seemed so. I looked at the pdf of plants in Columbia to find species there.

http://www.cucutanuestra.com/t...

Caladium marmoratum .. the Plant List gives it as a synonym of C. bicolor.

http://facultystaff.vwc.edu/~p...

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

Caladium picturatum, it was within the C. bicolor group but the Plant List has it as accepted now.

http://facultystaff.vwc.edu/~p...

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

http://www.google.co.uk/search...

Caladium sp. Silvestre only brings up two at the top of a google which are Syngonium sp., hovering over the photo give Caladium hybridum.

http://www.google.co.uk/search...

A history of Caladiums .. (they should have used lower case for the species epithet)

Large leaves of heart shape leaves are the cross breed (hybrid) from Caladium Bicolor while lance leaves are the cross breed of Caladium Picturatum x Caladium Schomburgkii

http://blog.weekend-gardening....

Caladium schomburgkii ..

Caladium bicolor var. rubicundum ..

Caladium bicolor ..

Caladium x hortulanum .. there's one called White Wing which is similar to yours,

Hello JRsbugs,
Thank you for all the links to information here about Caladiums. I am going to try & obtain the other variety of Thai Hybrid I saw the other day again this morning. The lady also has a strange philodendron that I want as well.

I moved to Tumaco, Colombia on the 5th of September to marry Jessy who is the woman in my photo. As far as I can tell I am the only Caucasian from the United States in all of Tumaco which is not really saying much with only 400,000 people. I love it here, & am staying.

I have been meeting people with plants since I got here, & made many friends this way. I am collecting plants to open a small garden store, & farm in the near future. I find it incredible that plants I collected in the wilds here are getting the attention they get...Lots of people have asked me to sell my plants, but that will not be happening until late next year. I am thinking of working with the 1 plant store owner here in Tumaco, since she seems like a wonderful person. I am going to try LariAnn's fertilizing regimen to increase my plants tuber size, & growth of my other plants. Unfortunately only 15/15/15 is available here to buy, so I am going to have my mother send me other combinations from the states.

I am excited to hear from her how it affects the caladium bulbs, & I am hoping the same affect happens with my other plants as well.

Hello Noel, you have seen the plants growing in their natural habitat, why don't you replicate the same growing conditions instead of going the 15/15/15 route or what ever? Bend down and pick up a fistful of the dirt in which the plant is growing and sniff it. Then listen to the flavor and the aromas, I think you will find mostly plant(organic) litter. Organic because there have to be some dead bugs, etc. also in there.
Regards,
Masud.
