Here's the list of roses available at $10 each from Roses Unlimited. They're 2-year-old plants, so they should be good-sized for the money.

oh lordy, you putz. I swore that I wasn't going to buy any roses from RU.. and here I am, putting in an order for 4 of them.

Maybe maybe if I bury them deep enough in mulch they will survive? My Rhapsody in Blue is doing quite well, as is Paw Maw, Hot Princess, Molineux, .. Orange Velvet is a monster for me (about 4' tall), and I just found that my Silver Shadows DID survive.. it's about 1/2 an inch tall right now. Yes, one half of an inch. But that's better than being dead!!

1 Natasha Monet
4 roses @ $10 = $40

To say the least, I'm pretty disappointed with RU's roses this year. Of the too many I ordered, I lost probably half and I doubt any will survive the winter. None of them took off this summer.. even sitting next to, say, a Cliff's rose. They're just *sitting* there. Sad I'll baby them this winter, but I'm going to chalk RU as a place not to order in the future.. they just can't survive my climate / incompetence.

I'm sorry to hear it, and I know the feeling. I typically give roses three or four years before deciding to dig them up and throw them out.

Maria Shriver grows quickly in my garden when the temperature is exactly 78F. The rest of the time she sulks. Haven't tried Natasha Monet. I think my Honeysweet from RVR might still be alive, but it spent all summer setting roots. Lavender Lassie and Gruss an Zabern took one or two full years to root, but growing in full shade* have been taking off like no other roses in the garden. I mention this because with some roses, especially ones with a good dose of multiflora heritage, semi-shade is sometimes enough light to get them to grow well and the shade helps keep soil moist and cool in arid western mountainous regions.

Toni, how are your Palatine roses doing? Have you tried any easy roses like Knockout, Felicia, Sophy's Rose, or Graham Thomas? Any advice on growing Austrian Copper?

* directly north of two good sized alligator junipers which cast dappled shade onto them from 10:00 to 3:00 every day during the summer.

How I grow an Austrian Copper - put in ground.

That's about it. Mine was planted 100% wrong.. the bud union is about 2" above the ground, gets about 50% shade, and STILL it's grown about 5' since I put it in the ground 3 years ago. I love it.. I just wish that it wasn't a one-trick pony! The blackspot doesn't bother it to the point that it's nude of leaves, I water it about 1/2 less than my other roses, it's in the crappiest soil (almost pure rock) and it still is so dependable when it comes to blooming!

I'm not digging them up & tossing them.. I just know that they're not going to survive. If I have ANY of RUs roses survive my winter, it's going to be a shock & a half. They were all extremely thin-caned and about a 3rd of them croaked from the heat, even though I watered every 4th day. Only RU rose that has done awesome was Orange Velvet that I got a few years ago, but that cane was much thicker than these 1/2" babies.

This was my 2nd time ordering from Palatine. I ordered 4 2 years ago and lost 2.. 1 from my extreme negligence, 1 from the weather (I lost Laguna Freelander & Stephens Big Purple). This year, I received my 5 and all of them will be just fine for the winter. I absolutely love Palatine's roses. I'm expecting the roses I got from Edmunds & GVR to survive the winter as well, mainly because they were bigger canes, not little microsquirts of plants. Even the "2 year old" roses I got from RU with my last order were still thinner than a cigarette.
