Per the Catalog of life (from GCC) and ITIS Tagetes patula is a synonym of Tagetes erecta.

Dave, could you please script:
Change all entries with Latin name Tagetes patula - accepted to read Tagetes erecta - accepted.
Then delete all duplicate entries without data, pictures or comments.
Then add Latin name Tagetes patula - synonym and Common names Aztec Marigold and French Marigold.

I can then update the balance of duplicates through the duplicate cultivars list.

Thanks,

Evan, this scripting is completed and as best as I can tell there were no duplicates created by this action. I was expecting that there would be some so if I have overlooked something, please do let me know.

I just want to comment that this has totally changed everything I thought I knew about tagetes, namely Tagetes patula and T. erecta!

So I was confused when I tried to accomplish various searches...

Here is what comes up when I search for Tagetes patula: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

Here is what comes up when I search for African marigold: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

Without going into detail - since I've always considered (and still do) that:
Tagetes patula is French marigold;
Tagetes erecta is African marigold;
this caused much confusion for me.

I guess it would help to add the following--
can we please add 'African marigold' to the common name list for Tagetes erecta
and add 'Tagetes patula' to the Botanical names list?

African Marigold (Tagetes erecta)

You're responding to an old thread, Christine, and I think the information in the thread has been rendered obsolete.

According to the updated data in the Catalogue of Life (July 29, 2014), Tagetes patula is still a provisionally accepted name, and it is not a synonym for Tagetes erecta.

http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

Tagetes erecta is also an accepted name, and T. patula is not one of its synonyms:

http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

The main problem I see now is that we had merged the T. tenuifolia entries with the T. erecta entries at some point, but COL now recognizes T. tenuifolia as an accepted name, so those entries will have to be separated again.

Thank you for responding Zuzu. The reason I found this thread is because I wasn't able to search for and find what I was looking for under Tagetes patula or Tagetes erecta.

When I pulled up Tagetes erecta, my photos of Tagetes patula (French Marigold) are there - I put those in the database a long time ago.

I see that some of the names have been changed since I put in this post.

I think all of the T. patula, T. erecta, and T. tenuifolia entries are now correct, but please propose the move of any photos you find in the wrong place.

Thank you again, Zuzu. I see that you have made all of the corrections - thank you for that also. Thumbs up Thumbs up

I'll make a note to put in my necessary proposals.
