What's Blooming in December

By LarryR
December 26, 2012

Writing this month's article is a special treat for me, because I get to see and talk about things actually blooming. I do that in my other articles as well, so why is this one different?. You see, our outdoor gardens, right now, are buried under five inches of snow and counting. Winds are gusting up to 55 miles per hour. Roads are impassable. Blizzard conditions. Come on in where its warm, see what's blooming, and meet our November contest winner.

Here it is, Tee: Grant Wood lived and worked in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. That's only about 25 miles from where I live in Iowa. He even painted a number of scenes here in the Amana Villages. The plant he used in the painting was his mother's. His sister got a start of the plant and later passed it on to Esther Armstrong, the wife of a department store owner in Cedar Rapids, who hired Grant Wood to design and build some of her furniture. I think she had also bought some of Wood's paintings. Esther passed on a start to Joan Liffring Zug Bourrret, a well-known Iowa photographer and publisher, who passed it on to Peter Hoehnle, a local historian. Peter passed a start on to me. I've since passed a start on to a gardener in California.

How interesting that you know its history. That's a very special plant to be associated with a Grant Wood painting like that. Quite a pedigree. Thumbs up

Isn't it great how plants get around? Great story, Larry, thanks! I will have to try the Queen Anne's Lace jelly in the spring.

Thanks Tee and Renée.

Renée, if you make the jelly, I'd be interested in knowing how it turned out.
