Someone picked these seeds out of their herb garden & i need an ID on them,any help is appreciated !!!

They look like Oregano to me, Jojoe.

This is Origanum vulgare, before the seed heads turn dry and brown.


[In addition; I brushed away the snow from my deck plant, and the seed heads look like the ones in your pictures.]

I didn't make myself clear sorry about that!! They are from 2 different plants. Chelle,which one are you talking about is oregano? I thought 1 was oregano.

I don't know if i should put this on a different forum or not but my daughter brought me a rosemary bush that they had at her work in the office at lens crafters,it has been pruned into the shape of a christmas tree.It has a label that says cold hardy to -10 degree's.It looks like it's drying out,it's turning brown and i would say loosing needles but it's not a christmas tree.

I will do some research to see if it needs to go outside & can't take the dry heat inside maybe that's why it's dried out.I will google it but if anyone has any advice i would appreciate it!!!.

yes... put the rosemary outside. In your zone it won't be a problem. It doesn't like the dry warm indoors in winter. I have two types of rosemary that are planted in ground and they overwinter fine. You might wait till spring to plant it in ground though.

The first one, jojoe.

The second one could be fennel, but can't really see it well enough to know.

The second might also be dill... , but it is rather difficult to see.

I was thinking the 2nd might be dill .. but the photo isn't clear enough.. sorry

Still looks like fennel to me. But I don't grow dill, so don't know how similar the seeds are.

I'd say they're probably fennel and oregano. Have you tried a crush and sniff test? Even with the better pictures it's still difficult for me to tell if the first one (in your last group of pictures) is fennel or dill.

These have been kept in a container to dry out.Can anyone give me a good web site or some advice on what to do with them now? I have never gown herbs and now i have.been given a rosemary bush and these seeds.I have never grown herbs and i haven't got the slightest idea what to do with them especially the seeds??

Yay! for your new camera and yes those photos are definitely more clear. I would guess the first to be fennel. Can you nibble a seed and tell us what it tastes like? Fennel is going to have a licorice taste. Of course, I am sure you know what dill tastes like.

The other one is niggling at my mind. I don't think it is oregano. Does anyone think it possibly resembles lavender?

And now I'm confused... the rosemary doesn't deliver edible cones or nuts in my experience.

My last post i wrote "they are in a container drying out" i wasn't very clear since i was talking about seeds & seed pods as well as the rosemary bush.I was talking about the seed pod had been put in something to dry out.Is there a big difference in growing these herbs and can they be sown outside in the spring? If they can is it best in pots or on the ground.The lady that gave them to me said she just put her seeds out as the plant itself would.She also gave me 4 o'clocks & morning glory seeds,saying to just put them out around jan or feb. and put a little bit of something over them to protect them from wind birds etc...(leaves,mulch,peat) only a little peat and not soil.Any opinions on this advice???

I understood what you meant about them drying out. Is the lady that shared them in the same zone as you?

I find it easier to start the seeds in a container. That way I can keep them moist till germination. In ground (and our local soil) there is a risk of it drying out and seedlings need moisture to germinate.

On the rosemary, I hope someone else will weigh in. I have never heard of cones or edible nuts on rosemary. Sorry...

I never saw any cones or nuts on my rosemary bush either. Wish they would produce nuts!
