My Mother loves cut flowers in the house. I'd like some ideas on roses that are prolific bloomers, forgiving of improper cutting techniques and scented as well. A few tried and true once bloomers would be fine, any bloom style - although it might be nice to have the bulk of the vase filled with singles and then just add a few of my full petaled repeaters to it. White, pink or a gentle yellow comes to mind.

Zone 5b growing conditions - anyone have any favs for filling vases without totally denuding the plant?

JFK is made for vases. Beautiful white. I think that Popcorn is also a nice white that has a scent, but not sure.

Sorry, I don't have much as far as your color scheme, mine are more in the jewel-tone range. I know that there's someone here.. Mike? who makes these stupendous vases.. and I think Cottage Rose does too, but I'm not 100% sure.

I really don't know which of my roses do well as cut flowers, but my mother (in Massachusetts) used to use Peace in her arrangements a lot.

Yes! I love my Peace rose but it doesn't produce masses of blooms, just a few at a time. Great for finishing the arrangement though! (Perhaps I should peg it?)

The main thing is the forgiveness part I'm thinking. Mom is going to go out and look at a bloom, look at the stem, gauge how long she wants it for the vase and make her cut....wherever and with whatever tool is handy. Will hybrid teas be able to take it and continue to prosper?

I have no clue. My mother grew Hybrid Teas with no difficulty; I can kill them just by thinking about them.

Most of my roses are Old Garden Roses which tend to survive despite my abuse/neglect. They also often have weak, short stems which might not be good for cutting. The once bloomer Seven Sisters produces huge numbers of flowers at a time in sprays and has sturdy stems, but I don't know how well they last in water. I'm pretty sure she would tolerate casual cutting with no problem. However what does well here may not do well farther north. - I'm not the right one to be offering suggestions.

Chelle - My JFK is only 3 years old, but I've had 3-4 roses on it at the same time. Sounds like you want Floribundas, which have naturally occuring bouquets. I don't have any floribundas in your color scheme other than Sunny Delight, and I'm on the wrong computer for pictures. Try Perfume Tiger.. naturally occuring bouquets but a lousy track-record for vase-life. Europeana is also a beautiful red, and they seem to stay OK in a vase for a short while. I'm more into the blue/orange family, so that's where most of my roses lie (I think I have 2-3 pinks in my entire yard.. almost everything is blue). Enchanted Evening, Cinco de Mayo, those are two off the top of my head that have beautiful bouquet-looking sprays, but, like I just said, I don't have any pics on this computer.

Phooey! There is NO blue rose!!! ;) Have I told you that's my biggest annoyance, that they call purple roses blue? ;)

Why? Because blue is my favorite color in the whole wide world, and there is no blue rose, never will be, unless they really start messing with the genetic make-up of roses.

Actually, Alan, they *are* working on genetically modifying roses with DNA from, I think, petunias or something like that. It's an Australian company that's doing it.. let me see if I can find the website. Personally, I don't think they're very blue looking.. not as blue as, say, Blueberry Hill or Blue Bayou (AWESOME rose.. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that rose! Thank you Zuzu!!).

Also, there's some people on eBay who swear that they are selling truly "blue" roses! None of them are available right now, but I've seen them in the past.

LOL! Well from the links provided, I seriously doubt I will ever see a true blue rose before I kick the bucket =) And the ones they call blue, that are purple. I didn't say they weren't pretty. They are!!! There just not BLUE!!

As I get a little more adept at planning plantings so that they don't clash I fully intend to acquire a rose like that! I've also drooled over a photo of a russet colored rose that Sue posted in the database - not my normal color choice at all, but someday.

I just had a thought that perhaps it would have been helpful if I told you what I have planted so far for this *chop for vases* project.

I have 'Armide' - which has produced abundant blooms already in this its first season.

'Agatha' - which hasn't bloomed yet.

'Madame Hardy' - which also spent this season rooting well, but no blooms.

'Golden Showers' climber - happy and growing well. Its first season produced a handful of blooms between two plants.

and 'New Dawn' climber - also growing great, but just a few blooms this first season.

Y'all in the West are experiencing some cold aren't you? I have a hot cuppa coffee - my vice of choice....and it is a vice the way I drink it. All day long, and deep into the evening!

Forgot to mention these two - they were planted with the idea that they'd being tolerant to cutting.

'Kazanlik' and 'Basye's Purple' - both planted this season as bands, just a few blooms so far on each.

I think the cold is about over, suppose to be 70 degrees today for a high, low 40's for a low. By end of week, the mid 70's, so not too bad.

You mean I can only have one vice???

I generally drink coffee every morning, but once in awhile when it's really, really, cold, love the cocoa!! =)

Hahaha! Just had a squirrel hurl itself at the window I'm sitting next to - 'bout jumped out of my seat!

This past weekend was pretty cold.. Thanksgiving went down into the negatives with the highs in the 20s. That being said, today's supposed to go into the 50s/60s? This has been the oddest fall, but I, for one, am very thankful as that means that all my new roses won't have to fight a horrific winter on top of a horrific summer we had. I'll be watering again this weekend.. we have a 10% chance of rain on Monday, but I'm not holding my breath.

Tequila Sunset makes for a nice bouquet, but wrong color scheme for what you requested.


My Sterling Silvers were also pretty high in the wow factor. This was really late in the season, so they're a little tattered from the light frosts.

Interesting too that 'Cherry Meidiland' was on my mind when I was "shopping" through RVR's site. By the time I left there I'd forgotten half the things I'd been searching for so it never made it into the order I did place. Maybe later when I place another band order.
Now I need to add 'Dorcas' to my order as well. My Mom will love that one especially, not only for the color and style but we also have a much-loved relative who goes by that name.

Another rose that produces "instant bouquets" is Bouquet Parfait. I bought mine from Burlington Nursery as a small band and it started producing these bouquets almost immediately. All of these blooms are growing at the end of one stem.

Pure Poetry is another one that does this. Hortico carries it.
