On my walk today I found this shrub, flowering in late January. A sign beside it identifies it as Halesia Carolina. I looked this up when I got home, but surely that isn't it?
The woody parts can be seen in the background. I didn't pay too much attention to them as I assumed the label to be correct. It is a multi-stemmed shrub, about 3-4m (10'-12') tall, vaguely rounded shape, a loose and open growth habit, upright and slightly arching stems. Looks like opposite leaves. You can see my fingers at the very left edge of one photo for flower size reference. Growing in a semi-shaded place in light parkland in south-eastern Germany.
It does look vaguely familiar but I just can't place it. Looks like something in the hazel/ corylaceae family.
Thanks!
