What is the name of this plant, and would you happen to know if it transplants well? A friend is wanting to get rid of it, so I would like to save it if possible.

Welcome!

It has several names (there's a lot of disagreement on which is the right name and I don't want to list them all) but you can't go wrong researching Philodendron bipinnatifidum.

Tree Philodendron (Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum) formerly known as Philodendron bipinnatifidum. It shouldn't be difficult to transplant. They are like weeds here in Florida.

Like that! The Catalogue of Life, (version 2020-12-1) recognized by NGA as the final authority for our DataBase, says its Philodendron bipinnatifidum. But in our DataBase, its listed as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, a name the CofL doesn't even list as a synonym.

It seems like scientists can't make up their minds. For years and years it was classified as Philodendron, then they changed it to the Genus Thaumatophyllum and now it looks like it's back to the Genus Philodendron again!! Blinking Our database administrator @zuzu will be able to make the corrections.

I'll fix the species entry and the cultivar entries. Thank you, Lin.

I seem to have fallen down a rabbit hole here. The CoL says the Thaumatophyllum genus does not exist, but we have many of its species listed in our database. Most of them were edited to show this genus name in February 2020. Apparently, DNA tests showed the existence of this genus, distinct from Philodendron, in 2018. Our database subsequently was edited to reflect this discovery, but the CoL still has not acted on this information. It's possible that taxonomists challenged the information and disagreed. It's also possible that the information has been accepted and the CoL hasn't caught up with this latest change. In either case, the species entries may require further editing. If this is a case of the CoL taking too long to show new information, Thaunatophyllum bipinnatifidum would be the accepted name of the plant. Stay tuned. Smiling

@zuzu, The CoL originally had them listed as Philodendron but a year or so ago, they changed the Genus to Thaumatophyllum and now it seems that sometime recently they've changed it back to Philodendron. I wondered if something got messed up in the past month or so when they changed the format of their site?

Thank you, Lin. That's good information. The change could have messed things up, or the DNA evidence could have been ruled inconclusive. We'll have to see what the next update shows, I guess.

You were right, Lin. Something did get messed up when they changed the format. I have it on the best authority that the next update will show all of the "new" Thaumatophyllum species. I'll now re-do my earlier edits to show that Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum is the accepted name of this plant.

I said I didn't want to dwell on all the names but using this one (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) will get you the right information. So will Selloum and it might be easier at this point. Rolling on the floor laughing
