Apparently, I'm trying to overwhelm the system.

'Hopewell Grenadier' is a Winterberry Holly with the known parentage of (Ilex serrata x Ilex verticillata 'Sparkleberry') x Ilex serrata. This proposal is being rejected when I submit it. Maybe there is a way to enter this among the genus and the species lines that I'm doing improperly.

The Winterberry Holly entries for 'Apollo', 'Autumn Glow', 'Bonfire', and 'Harvest Red' (Ilex serrata x Ilex verticillata, in the genus line) have been altered without incident.

Winterberry Holly (Ilex 'Apollo')
Winterberry Holly (Ilex 'Autumn Glow')
Winterberry Holly (Ilex 'Bonfire')
Winterberry Holly (Ilex 'Harvest Red')

There are going to be many more Holly selections that have complex parentage like this - as will there be Viburnums. If I am "barking" up the wrong tree to try to enter this information under the botanical name, then I'll cease and desist. If this kind of listing of all the crossings overwhelms the system, then showing this information in the comment section will be the next best place.

If there is a good way to include this information in the Latin name portion of the entry, I would like to do so. It is extremely helpful to less knowledgeable gardeners to understand the relationship between these hybrids of complex parentage, and the species of which they are composed and to which they are related. This is very important in knowing about pollination among the dioecious plants of Ilex and the self-incompatible Viburnum which require cross-pollination.

OK - this is probably not the appropriate way to make new entries, but at least it created an entry from which to consider this question:

Winterberry Holly (Ilex 'Hopewell Grenadier')

Not exactly or precisely right, but the information is in there. I await commentary from more knowledgeable database moderators/admins on ways to adjust this information.

This is what we do for the sempervivum. We have a field that we use. Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Fuzzy Wuzzy')

For the cultivars with complex and/or interspecies parentages, it might be cleaner to simply list Ilex (or Viburnum) as the Botanical Name and then ask Dave to add a field for "Parentage" or something like that in the data details area.

This is the right approach.

We also do this with daylilies - we have a Parentage data field and all the parents are listed there. We can add this kind of field for any kind of plant. Maybe we should have it added to the Primary Plant Details area so that it becomes available to ALL plants...

I like that idea. I looked at the entry that Lynn linked to, and that seems to give plenty of room to provide that hybrid parentage information.

I love it when I can see what the parents are of a particular sempervivum.
