I don't like how the weather situation is developing, particularly freezing rain. I will decide tonight what to do.

Thank You! I have all my toes and fingers crossed Crossing Fingers! I'm clinging to the fact that the soil must still be quite warm considering we have had over three weeks of high temps here, so they might be better off than other years that had a cooler start and then very cold.

Valerie, I am also hoping that the soil is warm enough, but still... I don't like freezing rains. I plan to work late tonight, so I'll keep an eye on the garden.
Did you say that some of your peonies got frozen today?

Valerie and Jasmin, I wish your plants will be able to tough it out with this bout of cold weather. Please let us know how they fare.

Valerie, your peonies look great! I hope that the peonies that you posted in the previous post will not be damaged. I would love to see your Kamata Fuji and Tranquil Dove in full bloom.

As of an hour ago, snowflakes have started flying. They cannot stay on the ground though. It is cold and the actual weather is worse than the forecast. Therefore, I brought in the geraniums and the new TP. I've also decided to cover Rockiis and Black Dragon with some Clematis brush and old branches of Christmas trees. Not much of the protection, but I hope it will work, if necessary. I only properly covered Chrisathmemus because their new growth is not protected. Now we can only wait and see Crossing Fingers!

Great job, Oscar. It looks like it should be enough. Hopefully it will move through your area quickly. Our weather forecasters stressed that it was a very fast moving front.

It's hard when we wait so long for our flowers to bloom!!

Here is my garden today, 8:51am. The TP buds wilted. It is still snowing.

Oh my gosh Jasmin and Oscar - we are still green up here but below zero still; I can't decide if I envy you your snow (except the weight) or not, as we know it also works as an insulator. Though looking at your plants again you would have to have a couple of feet of snow D'Oh! I'm going out to see what's happening I think although as we are promised yet another -3 night I might wait incase tonight will be the last straw for many buds. Fingers crossed for all our plants Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Second try at an update (? overly sensitive monitors) I did venture out and the Weather Network is correct - it feels like minus 7! Happily I can report that everyone has made it through last night's super-cold, even Tranquil Dove Thumbs up But, in a weirdly Freudian way, the one and only exception, out of hundreds of cvs, has its twelve inch stems completely bowed to the ground - America Shrug! Go figure.
Now I'm staying in to make bread Hurray!

I had about 2-3 inches of snow but it almost melted already. More worried about future -3C overnight than the damages from last night. Probably will cover TPs and small herbaceous if they are not under snow by evening. Weird to see so much of snow on 21 of April.

That is a lot of snow for all of you. I sure hope everything will be okay.

So Val you only have cold and no snow?

FYI: Monitors only see posts after they are posted and I do not think any of us would delete a post from you.

I sure hope that it doesn't get too cold tonight.

If you scroll down to the video "RELATED: HOW IS THE WEATHER IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO IMPACTING GROWERS?", they said fruit trees will not get damaged if the temperature stays above -4C. We should figure out similar thresholds for TPs and all other peonies. We should know how low temperatures can go before damaging peony buds. I assume, these numbers will differ for different peony groups and cultivars.
https://www.theweathernetwork....

As of today, after the snow has melted, Rockiis' buds and Hoki's buds are bowing. Hope they will recover. Crossing Fingers!
