We ended up having over 50 plants registered and about 45 in the actual display.
the theme was 'Continuing Education'

Thumb of 2021-03-05/sugarcane/fa57c4

about half of my plants and a couple of Jims ended up on the individual tables as they didn't work with the color flow..or the size of the plant etc.
I'll be clerking for the judges tomorrow morning ...fingers crossed we take the display blue ribbon and cash prize...for various genera.

Are you allowed to have live animals in your display??? I see a mouse in there!!' Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing D'Oh! 🐭

Seriously, the display is beautiful, nice job guys!!!
Color flow is so difficult but it looks good. You certainly have variety there not only in terms of genera but many shades of color.

My only comment is that for me, the jewel orchid and white Phalaenopsis might have worked better if they were flip-flopped. And then the schuetzei could be closer to the jewel orchid. It is a real nitpick maybe but to me, the jewel orchid(s) is the most spectacular plant in the exhibit and if it were lower and forward, it could perhaps be better positioned in order to drool over it!
Just one man's opinion!
I see many ribbons in your future!!!!

It's just lovely, and I think that the Ludisia makes a beautiful 'crowning glory' to the whole display. Against the black backdrop, it drew my eyes right away.

I also like the freaky Psychopsis with two flowers sort of 'floating' over the left side of the show there. Such wacky blooms.

A couple of new flowers open for me today. Nice big inflo on my Grt. Why Not. Just love this little plant and the color of those flowers. It seems to be really happy and healthy on it's cork mount, with a ton of new roots going on. I've tried twice before with this one, growing it in a pot, and a slat basket, so 'we shall see . . " if this is the ticket for it here in my jungle.

One very sad and beat-up bloom with thrips damage on my C. Tutankhamen 'Pop' this time. The poor plant - we've had a huge battle with Boisduval scale right through from last summer and I'm still not sure I've got it under control so it's done well to flower at all. I'm considering giving it a bath in spinosad after I extract it from it's steel basket, and divide it in half. One half of the plant is much happier than the other at the moment, and I hope to recover at least some healthy leads to go on with. This one, and Renate are scheduled for major surgery this week. Sighing!

Gorgeous color Nancy, just gorgeous!!
I am always at a loss for describing that color and others that are similar!

As a judge, I mean what is that? A deep rose pink, deep coral pink?? I don't know what describes it. It is worthwhile to mention all of those little spots. Great job! Thumbs up

The rosy pink with the yellow accents gives it just a hint of a coral cast, I think. Beautiful colors anyway. Nice job, Nancy.

Both lovely, great growing Gina..It's nice to finally be rewarded. BTW...Ursula's trick of threatening them with a salad fork really does work! Rolling on the floor laughing
Our club did really well at this weekends Orchid Show. Our display took the top honors and a $100 cash prize..every club member that entered a plant came home with a ribbon..one of the plants was pulled for AOS consideration but was ultimately passed on. I lost out on a cash prize for first time to bloom seedling to the guys at Krull - Smith...that had a spectacular Paph ( which also got an AOS award.) beat me out.

Congratulations!
I really still feel that competing against a commercial grower is so unfair to the club member, but in small venues they lump stuff together.
It is like trying to bring down a fighter jet moving at Mach 1.2 with a spit ball! Impossible.
But the best exhibit prize helps. And just to have something considered for AOS is a win in of itself. It was pretty enough to capture a judges attention and that is a win of sorts. It just didn't measure up.

Lindsey, you and your club did well. Hurray! If you have to lose, losing to the big guys makes it easier to take. You know your plant was right up there in stride with the professionally grown ones. Thumbs up

Professionally grown. I would put my lawyer hat on, ( I shudder in disgust ) but I would venture a guess to say a good grower like Lindsey grows her plant as good as or better then professionals. Individual care given to a single plant means something.
But let me emphasize genetics. Let's say that Lindsey has a plant of Cattleya Scooby Doo. Krull/Smith has 20 of them, 50 of them, a hundred of them! They have the opportunity to see them bloom, to see them grow, to suspect which plants might be tetraploids, etc. They can select the superior clones for awards or for breeding, whichever is their goal.

So for a persons plant to even be considered is a HUGE accomplishment lots of times. Now fortunately for us, the Orchid Community at Large, a hybridizer/grower can not keep them all and we get a shot at unbloomed plants. Getting a plant to a good grower like Lindsey who can provide the best of care to a plant can maximize the shape and size of the flowers. Water pick up and light are very important.

Hey, some hybridizers have hundreds of awards, maybe they forget a good percentage of them. The passing years are not so kind. Thousands of images dancing in ones brain get lost or forgotten. I have 7 awards, yet each and everyone is proudly remembered. I see each one like it was yesterday. But you have to agree that Krull/Smith's odds are a bit better. But then again this is why I judge, to give the big grower their props but to give everyone a fair chance.

After all it is all about giving each and every plant a chance no matter where it comes from. That is exactly why we are not supposed to know!

You nailed it on the head, Bill (as usual). Hobbyists are competing with commercial growers, growers that can choose from 1000's of plants. The hobbyist might have a handful to choose from. The odds will always be with the large growers.
