Zuzu - Not really.. I get the 16oz bottle for like $18 and that is at the most expensive LGS here in the Denver metro. It's AWESOME stuff.. it has brought "back to life" many roses that I thought were 100% gonners. I love the stuff & squirt it on every single rose at least once every two weeks or so. Just a little squirt, like the equivalent of like a teaspoon or so. I also squirt a lot (like 2-3 tablespoons) on all new-plantings.

I used kelp for the 1st time last year and was very impressed. As soon as spring arrives, I plan to spread it throughout the entire garden.

We feed kelp meal to our rose garden once a year in a self-mixed organic rose food we apply right after pruning each year. We've used MaxiCrop with wonderful results and also have used a fish-kelp fertilizer manufactured by the Grow-More company here in California. Another good product. More often the type of kelp that is used is Wrack Weed (Ascophyllum nodosum), a cold water marine macroalgae that is chock full of trace minerals. The revitalizing properties that kelp products exhibit are not the only benefits of the use. As the material itself is rich in Potassium (K), it helps to inhibit certain fungal enemies of roses including rust, powdery mildew, black spot, and downy mildew to just name a few. As a foliar feed, the activities are accelerated and can often be seen within a week of application. Care must be used as the provision of an abundance of elements that plants use in only small amounts can be a double-edged sword. This is a classic material where a little goes a long way.

I get Kelp Meal for my critters from the feed mill.
Might be cheaper than buying that liquid in a bottle
and easier to use. Just top dress your roses with it and
scratch it into the ground.

Just found a site that I was able to buy a gallon of Age Old Kelp, with shipping, for $38. That's butt-kickin' cheap! Yay! Didn't realize that a lot of people use it for hydroponics.

I bought the 1976 classic Seed Starter's Handbook this year because I wanted to try my hand at growing annuals and veggies. There's several pages dedicated explaining the advantages of using sea kelp for vegetables. So I think the idea that it produces useful effects has been around for a while. As Dr Don points out, in addition to potassium and trace minerals, it has a few organic chemicals that are believed to help plants grow and fend off disease.

I'm afraid I have been so focused on stopping critters from eating my plants whole that I've not yet spent much time spraying them with Messenger, Sea Kelp, Agroflash, or any of the other miracle sprays that grow tomato plants the size of redwoods and peas the size of watermelons.

I do have some roses that could use a boost that fertilizing with rose food has not supplied. So thanks for the heads-up, Toni!

I found it for $34 per gallon at The All Organic Garden, and got a 10% discount for typing in "Taylor" for the promotion code, which brought the price down to $30.60 (equivalent of $7.65 per quart). Shipping was just over $14.66 to New York (but no sales tax since I purchased from out of state).

I honestly don't know.. don't have access to that much kelp here and it's too expensive! There was 1 store that sold a decent 1gal bag for $5, but now, that store is gone and the other store that sells it is $7/handful.

Kelp doesn't grow wild in the mountains. LOL!
