I would have mentioned Annie's Annuals and Perennials, but since they don't offer all their plants at all times, I didn't.

I am considering buying some salvias from Flowers By The Sea, and I am wondering if those of you who have ordered from them could tell me about shipping costs. I know this will depend on number and size of plants, but I would be getting the 3 1/2" pots and maybe order four to start and see how they do. We have just lost a 17 year old Burgundy Salvia greggii and I want to find a replacement for it and add more salvias to our garden. I will appreciate all help anyone can give me.

Avedon,

I just went thru all of our emails to find my order at Flowers By The Sea which I placed Jan. 21, 2013. This is my third and happy year order and is the largest order I've placed to give you an idea.

Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' 1 $7.50
Salvia mexicana 'Limelight' 1 $7.50
Salvia x 'Scarlet Spires' $7.00 2 $14.00
Salvia dichlamys 1 $7.50
Salvia oppositiflora 1 $7.50
Salvia regla 'Royal' 1 $7.00
Salvia farinacea 'Henry Duelberg' 1 $7.50
SAL-0064 Salvia melissodora $7.00 2 $14.00
SAL-00117 Salvia x 'Wendy's Wish' 1 $7.00
SAL-0011 Salvia buchananii 1 $7.50
SAL-00776 Salvia spathacea 'Las Pilitas' 1 $7.50
SAL-0038 Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious' 1 $6.50
SAL-00769 Salvia microphylla 'San Carlos Festival' 1 $7.50
SAL-00150 Salvia miniata 1 $7.50
Subtotal: $129.50
Shipping cost: $32.05

Total: $161.55

If I counted correctly, it is 16 plants.

After I placed the order in Jan., I deleted Salvia spathacea 'Las Pilitas' $7.50 1 $7.50 and substituted Salvia x 'Scarlet Spires' $7.00 2 $14.00 (which now makes 3 of them) Lovey dubby

Not bad.. spent over $200 on roses from Palatine, then another $155 on roses from Roses Unlimited, then another $65 on roses from Burling Roses.... *Blush* so my ordering options are kinda blown for the year. I plan this a year in advance to make sure I have the $.

Thanks, everybody, for the responses. Kermit, I am surprised and really happy that the shipping charges are so reasonable. Now my biggest problem is just which ones do I order? Green Grin! Marilyn, I think I will be getting some of the ones you have on your list, but my list well be pretty short, maybe six tops. I need to figure out just where I want them to go

Oops! *Blush*

I didn't have all the plants listed I'm getting. *Blush*

I went back to the email and I'm getting 19 plants total, not 16 ($32.05 shipping):

Salvia coccinea 'Coral Nymph' $4.50 1 $4.50
Salvia coccinea 'Forest Fire' $4.50 2 $9.00
Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia mexicana 'Limelight' $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia x 'Scarlet Spires' $7.00 2 $14.00
Salvia dichlamys $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia oppositiflora $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia regla 'Royal' $7.00 1 $7.00
Salvia farinacea 'Henry Duelberg' $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia melissodora $7.00 2 $14.00
Salvia x 'Wendy's Wish' $7.00 1 $7.00
Salvia buchananii $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia spathacea 'Las Pilitas' $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious' $6.50 1 $6.50
Salvia microphylla 'San Carlos Festival' $7.50 1 $7.50
Salvia miniata $7.50 1 $7.50
Subtotal: $129.50
Shipping cost: $32.05

That's great shipping for 19 plants! When I was looking at the list that Toni quoted, I thought, were is the one plant of Salvia coccinea 'Coral Nymph' and the two plants of Salvia coccinea 'Forest Fire'?!

So by going back, I found them listed from the email I got after I ordered them and just wanted to update my list of what I'm getting.

I'm decided not to get the one plant of Salvia spathacea 'Las Pilitas' and sub it for one plant (making three for the order) of Salvia x 'Scarlet Spires'.

I'm still thinking of getting one more Salvia to add to the order before it ships late April.

Toni,

Then plan on getting some Salvias or other plants from Flowers By The Sea for next year. Thumbs up

Avedon,

I usually look for Salvias (or other plants) that attract Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Bees, but sometimes I get plants just for my enjoyment.

There is a very large selection at FBTS and it's hard to decide which ones to get. The last two years I got 6 or 7 plants each year. This year I went 'whole hog'! Hilarious! Thumbs up

Which ones have you decided so far?

Marilyn, Salvia melissodora definitely makes the cut. I first saw this plant several years ago at the Antique Rose Emporium. I was at the Fall Festival there sometime around 2003 the first weekend of November and I was stunned!!! It was quite large, had been growing there a few years and was beautifully blooming and covered with pollinators, plus there was a fragrance. When I inquired about it, no one really seemed to know much about it, but finally some one said they thought it was a salvia. I knew it was a salvia because of the foliage but which one? Turns out Betsy Klepsch--sorry if I miss the spelling of the last name--had done a program for the Fall Festival in 1999 and of course, she brought along plants to sell. Unfortunately, I missed going that year because we were making our move over here to East Texas at that time. I have never forgotten about it, and when I saw it listed by FBTS, I knew that would be first on the list. I think I will also order S. microphylla "Flower Child" for I have a small area to fill and I think this would do it. I must choose a burgundy type to replace the one we lost this year, there are a number to choose from, and I do want a blue one or two. Decisions, decisions!!!! One thing, most must be shorter. I would love some of the big ones, but I am going small first to see how they do here.

Avedon,

I'm putting my Salvias into containers and maybe one or two into the ground. Don't have a lot of space to plant them all into the ground.
