Hi I did not realize there was a shade garden section here. I have a long narrow strip between houses. One half in the sun, and one half in shade. This year I am trying to grow hostas and shade plants in the shady spot. I have gotten some hostas, some bleeding hearts, and am thinking of Heuchera as another potential plant.

All areas get morning and afternoon sun.

But!

I heard that Heucherella can take even deeper shade. So, can someone clue me in on the difference between Heuchera and Heucheralla?

Thanks, Katy

Heucheralla is a cross between a Heuchera and a Tiarella. They like shade and so does Tiarella. Heuchera can take some sun depending on the variety.

If getting afternoon sun look for Heuchera and Heucherella with Villosa in their background.

Carnival Watermelon gets a lot of sun in my garden. It also gets pretty big. One of my favorites!

Bob,

That picture is from last year. Mine seem to have survived the winter without too much damage.

Here's a picture from yesterday after I trimmed off the winter kill.

These are mine from 2020. I did notice that in the above pics none of the heuchera are in wood mulch.
Initially I had mine in wood mulch but read somewhere that this gradually kills them, so switched it out for fire glass.
Anyone know if the wood-mulch claim is valid? Is it toxic to heucheras?

I have sort of wood mulch, they came from the dirt bags I purchased, dirt chip kind.
Here is a picture of my heuchera, but I did kill a lime green one.

Never really had any issue with wood mulch as long as you keep away from crown of plant to avoid crown rot. I guess stone works better against frost heaves because of the weight of it. But have to say that glass mulch really makes the colors pop.

Hi everyone. So I got a shade garden together. There are not a lot of plants, and it is not very filled in. I got 5 hostas (all on sale) 3 white old-fashioned bleeding hearts, one large astilbe Chinensis (visions in pink), and one Coral bell "Melting Fire). I really love the astilbe now, and the coral bell. In pictures this kind of coral bell, the all dark red type look kind of flat and muddy, but in real life, it looks so much nicer. I'm just going to stick with this set this year. Maybe next year get a few more, but I really do like the bleeding hearts and astilbe.
